I purchased this set the instant I saw it, and what better time to do it than Chinese new year? The year of the Dragon! I've been a fan of Chinese culture for a long time and the iconic imagery of the Dragon is something I've loved since childhood, so this set was a must-buy. Even the box is a work of art; with its deep red dragon and Chinese lantern theme.
Build wise it's pretty straightforward, the instructions are clear and that makes things much easier - there are a few more advanced build techniques in there, but as I say the instructions are so clear I don't think anyone would be stuck for long. The set is age rated 10+ and I think that's about right for the difficulty.
If I can offer one small criticism for the sake of trying to make this set as accessible as possible - There are several elements in the set which are likely to spark curiosity and questions, the name plate and the blue crystal (or pearl). Unfortunately Lego missed a trick here as the instructions contain no information about these elements and I think it would have been a good move to include some printed information about these elements and their significance. I would very much like to see Lego continue and do some more cultured sets like this and if they do, I sincerely hope that there will be some information in the instructions for those who aren't aware. But this is a minor gripe, as you can always research the images.
So when all is said and done you're left with a completed dragon, a truly striking piece and something that's not stopped drawing my gaze since I completed it. I absolutely adore it and I think I'll proudly display this one as a permanent display piece.
Well done to Lego, well done to the designer - I'm simply blown away by this one.
