Nostalgic Plumbing

Valerian70 October 28, 2020

This little beauty has been sat in my cupboard of joy for far too long and seeing as I had almost 2 weeks off work (11 days if we are being precise) I decided it was time he came out and got built. I fully expected to have to spread this over 2 days but got it done in one rather late night session. Admittedly I no longer part sort, I just tip each numbered bag in to a couple of plastic tubs for easy fishing through so that speeded things up immeasurably. I had a few issues building the internal mechanism for the cartridge return. The spring is so strong when built it kept popping the bricks out of place so I had to do a bt of one handed building whilst I held it in place. Once the layer of securing bricks goes in place though it really does stay put. Even better when built it genuinely works and feels sturdy and certainly had no breakage issues with repeated use. The booklet does say the designers tested it thousands of times to make sure it woudl keep working and that certainly paid off. For me the highlight of the build was making the scrolling screen. Then again the highlight of the modular building sets is always tiling the front of the street, so I'm weird. Took me maybe an hour to construct the screen but it was really good fun and I enjoyed watching it all come together. Even better because I have recently built the Crawler Crane the tracking was a familiar mechanism as it is the same as the one used for caterpiller tracks. The only iffy bit for me was fitting the TV to the stand. If you don't have your grey straights in the correct place on the bottom of the TV there is nowehre to secure the stand to. I simply turned the TV upside down and lined them up that way, definitely works and at no time have I felt like the TV is going to fall off it's stand. There are a couple of stickers included in the kit. Fortunately they are the large ones for the back of the TV and for the game cartridge. Everything else is preprinted. I dread to think how hard it would have been to get stickers on all the little bits and bobs on the TV screen. Really interesting build with some new to me techniques and generally gives a great all over finish. Displayed it looks wonderful. Even better is when you put the Super Mario figure on the top and then run the scroll. No need to load the Super Mario App either which is a bonus. Nostalgia Guaranteed!

BricklyMcDuff January 10, 2021

This set is incredible! My son (6) and I built it together and both of us had a great time. There's lots of different build techniques involved. The scene did take a bit of time as we aligned everything neatly but it's worth it! The only downside is right at the end when you realise the stand doesn't connect to the TV. It makes it realistic in terms of having a TV sat on a stand but I'd like to have it stuck together because I worry I'll be the one to knock it off! Building the Nintendo brought back a lot of memories for me and playing with Lego Mario on the TV set has made new ones for us both. The clicker behind the dial is genius! This set will 100% astound our friends and we're so glad we have it.

Amazing Detailing. Great Price. A++++

PhillyCharizard006 August 1, 2020

This is definitely one of the coolest, most detailed sets I've ever bought. The interior of the console and TV have pieces of a variety of colors which add some pizazz to this set. The detailing include all of the cable slots, as well as, the switches and dials. I love that you could insert the game inside the Console. It would have been cooler if there were another cable connecting the TV to the Console. There are only three big stickers. All of the small pieces are printed. There is virtually no repetition. The crank works perfectly and the added Mario figure glides through with no issues. Overall this set is definitely recommended for any LEGO or Mario fan

I recommend to everyone!

Devilfoxe January 17, 2022

It is the first time I buy/built a Lego for myself like an adult. It was a pleasant surprise. The building experience it was really interesting and relaxing. Easy to follow steps and straight forward instructions. The TV mechanic is simple but is really cool to build it and even more cool to show it! The final results is looking amazing!!! Really close to the original. An the TV is looking far better than what I was expected. It not really big and that for my is a big +++ Because is really nice decorations that Drow attention with out take to much space or distract the eye.

Great set for playing and collection

Shelmon August 19, 2020

Amazing set. It's my childhood memory! Great details and wonderful design. The delivery was faster than I thought. When I got home it was there. I start to build it immediately. Totally enjoy the experience and result. My cat accompanied me and shared the joy. The only two problems are: 1. I got a nes piece with wrong color. It's dark grey instead of light grey. I have to hide it inside. It makes me uncomfortable. 2. The tv stand should connect tight with tv. I noticed there are 2 spaces on the stand matching the two light grey blocks. But the instruction doesn't use them. I moved the three light grey blocks below tv, it works better. All in all, I love the set!

Thought it would be boring, I was wrong

Conor1 February 11, 2022

Great set. So creative. It looks like just two squares but there is so much detailed work involved in it. Fantastic. Would recommend to anybody to build. And the crank that moves the game along, stupendous. Whoever thought of that give them more money. I really enjoyed this set. Fans of old school Mario need to buy it.

My favourite build thus far.

JDWLegolad August 11, 2020

From the moment you see the box you are instantly taken back to the golden era of Nintendo. The packaging and the Nintendo logo just transport you. Opening the box you find over 20 bags, but some are very quick side builds which help construct the mechanical nature of the set. It does a fantastic job of not giving too much away, it's like a magician letting you back stage at his show but not telling you any secrets, just giving you an extra point of view from the usual spell bounded audience. The build starts with the console which very quickly you realise feels like it was created to be immortalised in lego form with its typical blocky design. Before long you are desperate to see the front tiles with Nintendo font being placed on the cartridge flap. The power and reset printed tiles reminding you of the amount of times you had to reset your console. After the console you are greeted with the smaller builds of the controller and the cartridge. Although these are pretty simple when you hold the cartridge for the first time you can remember taking it out to give it a blow. The green tiles inside a reminder to looking in and seeing the green data part of the cartridge. You certainly feel like you have accomplished something at this stage, to see something so prevelant from your childhood sitting in front of you that you have constructed from Lego bricks is quite a moment. The last stage of the build is the TV. Personally I would say this is the hardest build. You are dealing with some cogs and wheels. Take extra care to make sure things are in the right place, the right way around, the right size. Thankfully I made little to no errors as I was concentrating but this would be extremely frustrating if you go towards the end and something didn't quite work in the rotate system. There is a section with a lot of repitition, place 30 single bricks here, connect 30 clamp bricks together. I would recommend a break before tackling the TV because regardless of how fast you are it's a time consuming task with the single bricks. Everytime you click something jn place you find yourself turning the lever to see what's new and what's turning. Even the more decorative side of just the printed tiles for the TV that show power etc just make this set really come to life. The final bag gives you the TV scrolling Mario who attached to the magic when you turn the level he seems to play and jump over the level you have created in bricks. Its a piece of mechanical genius. Or is it magic? I'm very happy with it. I've not seen Lego come to life in this way before. If this holds a special memory for you then I recommend it. The nostalgia and the magic are palpable. My 5 year old is astounded turning the level. My only negative and mistakes do happen is a missing piece, quite a big piece that goes on the top of the TV. Unfortunately I got to the very end and couldn't finish the cosmetic top of the TV.

Took me back to my childhood

Anonymous November 4, 2022

As soon as I saw this set I knew I had to have it! The original Nintendo console was my first one growing up, it brought back fond memories of playing Super Mario. I love the fact the game cartridge actually goes in and pushes down just like the real thing. The crank on the TV works beautifully, building the screen reel was brilliant. I finished it in two days and loved every minute of it. I would recommend to anyone who grew up in the 80 and 90s to relive your childhood 😁

DON'T READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED!

ESKO August 3, 2020

If you haven't figured it out yet, there's an easter egg hidden inside the console! On the right side the panel pops off and inside are the platforms and pipes that lead you to the different worlds. Such a clever surprise, and fitting since it's probably considered the world's first easter egg.

I'm only doing this for attention...

MrSparkle October 7, 2020

But I'd really love to give this set 6/5. There's only 2 reasons that I can't. 1. I received a twisted 6x8 plate used in the game cartridge itself, 2 bowed 2x16 plates in bag 7 for the console top, resulting in a flaw in the finished product. My manuals were also badly folded on themselves inside the box and the loose antenna rod was quite bent, and even straightening it with my fingers for 20 minutes didn't get it all that perfect. I would have thought that when a highly anticipated product sells out on the first day and we have to wait 6 weeks of checking the website every day to even be able to order one again, that the quality control would be on point and not rushed like it seems was the case for a number of people here. 2. I think there could have been a bit clearer of an instruction on the tv base. Since I've done the Ideas Treehouse, I've faced the no-stud-clip method before. But other than lack of clarity, I see no real reason to down rate for it, so hopefully this review helps a few people. If you struggle with the tv stand, turn it upside down to get a better look. There's no studs, but there's still a trademark “snap” when you get it right. I'd lastly like to give some advice for bags 17-19: if you need an efficient way to straighten your 1x1 tile decorations, my best method was to place all the 2x16s on a flat surface (Technic bits removed) and sandwich them between two long bricks. It's not perfect, but it's much nicer for your fingers than fiddling with single 1x1 tiles. Pro tip: wait til you've done both layers of decoration, i.e. bag 19, to save triple handling. All being said and done this was a fantastically entertaining build, and I would like to give my sincerest thanks to the designers, the LEGO team, and most of all Nintendo for allowing this all to be possible. I was even thankful for the Zelda and Metroid teasers in the front of the manual. ;) I will be even more thankful when we can buy new screens, second controllers, and extra game paks and stickers form that extra authentic look & feel. ;) ;) hint hint.
