I am a massive fan of the technic line and although I always put off the smaller sets as I love a big build I was actually quite excited to start this kit. The pull back mechanism is an awesome inclusion and gives a lot of fun playability to the set - but, be careful they do have a tendency to run the full length of my table and need catching before they hit the floor. The main build here is the Dragster and it even comes with the ability to run it with the front wheels lifted off the ground. I didn't find this as smooth to operate as all 4 wheels on the ground when playing but your mileage may vary (pun not intended but I'll go with it). Looks really cool when built, I was surprised how nice the end vehicle was at it did look a little basic on the box art. This is one case where the stickers really do elevate the finished product and give it a nice dimensionality if you are adding it to your display. The second build is the Hot Rod which is probably my favourite version of the build. Instructions for this build need to be downloaded from Lego but come in .pdf format so you can access them from more or less any electronic device. I use my tablet as it is a 10" screen so makes them easy to read. Fun to build with a lot of familiar Technic techniques. This would definitely be a great introduction set to the range but be warned, they are addicting! This is a quick and easy build. I only part I don't care for is the flames out if the exhaust, so I left that off. My son plays with it. It is durable and won't fall apart. The wheelie action is great. And the pull back gear is such a wonderful idea. I would recommend this toy. Family time, Learning, and a joy. Great add to the collection.
Bought as a gift for my son. Thoroughly enjoys. Easy to put together!
The dragster build/design is great. I recently built the roadster alternate design and I made one simple addition that really improves the look. On alternate instructions page 14, step 17, add tan pins (6013938, included in this set but not used in the alternate build) between the black pin and the gray #3 angle connector (one on each side). The tail lights (step 18) will rest on the tan pins at an angle instead of being loose or moving around. I think this makes the roadster's rear profile look really sharp!
I bought this set mostly because I liked the look of the alternate model - but it turns out tweaking the main one for ideal performance has been so much fun it could be quite a while before I get to that! First thing I noticed before I'd even given it a test run was the multiple heights possible for the wheelie bar; the instructions didn't quite get this across to me but fiddling around I found 2+ lower positions including one that *looked* too low by eye but turned out to be just about perfectly in line with the front & rear wheels. Then I had some trouble with the rear tires slipping on takeoff (even after cleaning the floor and tires - a little moisture improves the rubber/road connection); it seemed some slightly 'slicker' tires might be more ideal, but then I noticed the 42118 Grave Digger with its bigger tires was outperforming it. Looking around at other models in the house I found a pair of 49.5 x 20 tires (compared to the included 42.5 x 22) and was impressed with how much better it worked despite the narrower tires. The tread seems to grip better and the bigger diameter boosted takeoff speed, without noticeable 'wheelie control' problems. I'd like to try a little gearing along with some slightly *lower* 'slick' tires too before I move on the dragster build. Definately a lot of 'playing around' bang for your buck here! I'm looking forward to trying the 42104 Race Truck model as well,
I have never been a big fan of the Technic pull backs. With that said, this is a very good use of that. The bugcatcher and flame elements have a loose fit. As this thing scoots across the floor those parts look the part. And the adjustable wheelie bar lets it go straight or pull a wheelstand off the line. Just a matter of how you set it. Very good set for a quick build, and a good use of the pull back motor system.
In his words "its great, I would love to get more Lego Technic sets. Its so awesome." (6 yrs old) We had a great time building this together and the pull back functionality is great!
my grandma got me this toy and it is fun! Easy to put to getter i love it.
It has clearly been previously returned. The paper was torn off as if someone had ripped tape off and it stuck. Possibly a birthday gift. How can I give that as a Christmas gift to my friends son? (I cant) How could Walmart think it was ok to ship it out like that? Never again. I dont have time to buy and return things like this. I have circled the ripped paper. At first I thought it was part of the photo until I saw the dangling paper on the side and looked closer.
