I bought it for my 9 year old son as a x-mas gift. The final result gave him a great sense of accomplishment. The rugged design of the car is way better than the real one which is too round. The real one should have come out this way. He had a lot of fun for 7 hours straight without meals. I see a lot of complaints about the noise from the gears after finishing. But I found no mistakes in the set at all. It works just fine even if my son finished all by himself. That must be caused by the two universal joints which are not connected firmly. I confirmed it for my son. If those are loosely connected, the noise will be inevitable. So just be careful when you assemble two universal joint parts inside. Only one problem my son found on this was the disassembly which would be very painful.
This is my first ever Technic set (and my first LEGO set in many years) and I will say: I had great fun building it. Don't listen to the people saying stuff doesn't work or the instructions are bad. If you pay attention and follow said instructions carefully, there will be no problems with the final result. My only gripe is that because of the long links between the engine and wheels it takes a few wheel rotations before the pistons start moving, but all in all, it's a great set. I don't really have a point of reference, this being my first Technic, but I feel like the price is pretty good considering how much more expensive the Chiron and Sian are.
I'm a Lego parent that has witnessed greater than 50 sets coming into our household since my last set, the old Millennium Falcon maybe ten plus years ago. I was becoming a little jealous of how much fun my kids were having so wanted a piece of the action. I was drawn to the Technic (never owned or built before) and in particular the Land Rover Defender primarily to experience something challenging (I suppose I'm a novice to intermediate builder) but also loved the overall design. The reviews and apparent value considering the piece count sealed the deal. I was super excited when it arrived and really wanted to take my time and enjoy the build experience. I really hit the jackpot with this set. The packaging and presentation was sublime. Instruction book and the number of bags (bags within bags) were a little over-whelming but again this was the challenge I wanted. It took me 7 days spread out with an hour on weekdays after work in the evenings and 4/5 hours on each of the weekend days. I honestly enjoyed every minute of the build and even caught myself smiling on numerous occasions where I sat back and reflected on what a great decision it was to invest in this set. Seeing every element come together was excellent. When it was completed I was like my kids calling every family member in to look at my creation to show off all the features, gears and engine. Everything was smooth and working well with one exception; the pistons of the engine were not working. I know some other reviewers were frustrated after such investment of time but I was actually delighted as it gave me a new project to root cause the error. After twisting and turning the vehicle upside and down trying all the different cogs, reviewing videos and learning a lot more about the build, I was systematically able to root cause the issue all the way back to step 11 (out of 800+ steps), wow, right at the start of the build – which makes perfect sense… I was so rusty and eye sight not what it used to be! Perhaps lucky (although I didn't mind ‘starting over') I was able to remove ca. 20 pieces and get to the fault and rectify. Oh the joy when I saw those pistons go up and down and all my efforts being paid off. Pros: + Challenging + Time to Build + Design & Appearance + Engine & Gears + Features Cons: None. Thank you Lego, I can't emphasise how much I enjoyed this and really well done to all involved in this design.
Yet another great set from Lego, as usual clear step by step instructions for an easy build, some great features add to the realism of this set. Once I had built it even my neighbour commented on it. The set is also good value for the money, considering the part count. I would recommend this to Lego and land rover fans.
This was my first time building a Technic set but I loved it. Bought and built during lockdown so I rationed my time spent on it to makes sure I didn't complete too quickly. Love the detail. During the build the engine pistons moved fine but on completion there was no movement. After playing with the gears a bit I eventually got them moving. Love the winch, suspension, steering and the read door opening with the spare tyre. Can't wait for my next set to arrive!
I have built a few large Lego Technic models but this is one of the best! I am a big Land Rover fan, so a little biased. Please see the photo I took of this kit with the Defender that I built using parts from my Mercedes Arocs. If you are thinking of buying this as a Christmas present for your partner they will love it. It costs a lot of money but it is so complicated and I think it is great value. My only criticism is that the angle on the diagonal shafts is too big and they are fiddly to get working properly. I would advise fitting the wheels temporarily at the end of stage 2 to test that all the gears work correctly. Now I am going to figure out how to fit motors to make it remote control!
I bought this for myself as my husband was going away for a few days, absolutely loved building it, the finished product is amazing looks fantastic and the working parts are brilliant. …. And it's great for winching away other Lego vehicles haha
A build that rewards patience and attention to detail, if you rush it you'll pay the price later, the instructions give enough information to get it right, The build it's self is fun for the most part as the model comes together, each section showing the 'possible' inner working of the real car, The detail of the model is impressive, the stickers add more detail to it and blend nicely, some require a bit of patience to line up and may upset some ocd sufferers if they are bit off :) I think it could've been a bit more symmetrical in places such as the front section of the white roof, and the roof racks lack support but with spares from the build i have secured them, despite peoples complaints about the gearing not being aligned or gear box short comings i had no issues in my build, runs smooth as silk when pushed in any gear.
Another great Lego set. Fantastic. A set as realistic as possible. Complex, challenging but a huge satisfaction of its construction and especially in its completion. Congratulations Lego, once again.
As most other reviewers has said this model is very very good. Great suspension, winch, rear door mechanism and robustness of the overall build. The build is challenging with regards to the running gear but with some patience and following the instructions closely I didn't experience any of the gearbox issues other seem to have suffered from. I do, however, have a major gripe with the vast numbers of stickers and their poor quality, both printing accuracy and die cutting which caused some of the stickers to delaminate or tear. I don't usually apply stickers but, on this occasion, thought they would add to the model's detail but now wish I hadn't.
