LEGO Technic Off-Road Buggy 42124 Model Building Toy; App-Controlled Retro RC Buggy Toy (374 Pieces)

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It's scary at first because of all the parts but honestly the instructions are so easy to follow that it makes everything so easy to build. My son and I built it together and it was neat watching him build this with me. He was so excited when we finished and hasn't put it away since! It's a great bang for your buck! My son has been playing with it all over the house and even took it outside and let me tell you, it's very sturdy!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this for my son for Christmas he was very excited. It took us about 3 hrs to put together so being a 10 year old he got very impatient. There was alot of tiny pieces and the directions were somewhat easy for me to understand but for my 10 year old son it was kind of difficult for him to understand. I did have to put most of it together. The pieces did snapp together very easy and if you put the wrong piece on it was easy to unsnap and fix it. It was very easy to set up once you got it put together. You just download the app and turn the Bluetooth on and let it sync. It is hard to steer its very touchy. It is neat cause it tells you the speed and the incline which makes it very neat. If you hit the car off somthing though the piece the holds the wheel on likes to keep popping off so this is a car that you have to be very gentle with. Other than that my son loves it.

My wife and I saw this at a hobby shop. I haven't built anything Lego since I was a kid but it seemed like a neat kit and the fact you can control it with a smartphone is cool. We bought the kit and decided to work on it together. I assembled and she found the parts I needed. We took our time and it turned out great. The only negative is that the app only has one virtual joystick for this model, which controls both the steering and forward/reverse speed. This makes going straight and turning while moving a little more difficult than if there were separate controls for each function. I'm impressed and now looking at other Technic builds for another project.

Hello, lets start with minuses: - It says that its a off-road buggy but isn't AWD. - Doesn't feel fast. - Sometimes after a crash elements connecting back of the car to the main part ( energy storage, e.t.c.) disconnect easily. But there are some pluses: + Even if it may not be fast ( in my opinion ) that's one of the fastest lego technic vechicles probably. + The front wheels doesn't depend on each other with amortisation for example the right wheel can amortisation and go up on a obstacle while the left wheel will not move. + Using a clever ideas like as I said about the amortisation and the steering is very good beacouse when i tried making it AWD it wouldn't turn that good even after hours of trying to make the steering ( in AWD ) as good as possible. + The last plus that i found is the battery, maybe i dont drive it very often but with a six pack of batteries it runs even over a month of driving 2 times a week. That was my opinion, so let's go to the part of my idea. Unfortunately for me, a kid that may not love lego that just sits on a windowsill and gets dust i thought why the LEGO Technic seems slow. From my point of view a good idea is making of this series something really powerfull, something that you can feel that it's not a normal set. I don't expect that it's going to be a 40 km/h (25 mp/h) beats but anything that will be able to drive in mud and pillows that suprisingly are hard for my buggy. The buggy itself is a nice kit. The build, while not complicated, was fun, and the resulting car was solid. Although I do think it's a bit pricey given the brick count. I also like how fast it moves. For an indoor RC toy it's moves at a nice clip. Unfortunately the controls are not great. The single joystick controlling both speed and direction make it difficult to control given how fast it moves. I understand Lego was going for a bit of a retro feel with this kit, but any older RC vehicle I used always had separate speed and steering controls. I echo other reviewers who hope a software update will include a second controller option.

I've had this set now quite a few years and while it does sit on a shelf occasionally my kids and I will take it out for a rip. Like most people say. The controls are less than ideal. Frankly Lego should have a control that is sold separately to make this line of products more fun! That said we do have loads of fun with it. And unlike others we do actually use it outside in the dirt, grass (shorter grass) even a pump track once. It's fast for Lego and fun.. maybe fun because the controls are less than accurate. Either way it's had some good use. Big tip.. take batteries out if not using it!! Anywho is a nice set to assemble and holds up fairly well. Couple parts do come off and we have an Axel that slides out of place occasionally. But that's maybe part of the fun. Tinkering using building etc.. kids love to see how all the parts work together.

So like I wrote in the title I did not buy this set cause it was nice itself, I got it mostly for the hub and motors. Actually, I first bought a hub and 2 motors separately and then I realized it was cheaper to buy this set and basically get the same thing plus about 300 other technic pieces useful to build cars. So the choice was easy. I don't know why they don't make packages with a hub and a few motors, but this is kind of it... I think overall the playability is better than the top gear rally car cause it's faster. But the steering is really bad, it turns way to fast, so even if you add other motors and change gear ratio, you won't be able to go in a straight line. You'll have to change the steering mechanism and at this point that's a moc, not a mod.

As a lego purchase, is has very few parts for a $200 model. Though thats due to the expensive motors. Its pretty quick and simple to build. I made the whole thing while my kids watched Despicable Me 3. Fun and not too time consuming. As an RC car, my son's 4 RC cars were faster and they cost about $40 each. They dont have suspension, though you could argue the lego model's is almost academic as the spring are super stiff, if the springs did move, the, impact would be enough to pull the car apart. The mobile controls are horrible, as many people have stated. Apparently there are instructions on youTube to program something better, just haven't got there yet. As a lego model that has RC functions, its great except for the app, which could, hopefully be fixed by lego. As an RC car, its slow, stiff and looks like the old Tamiya cars of the 80s, though this doesn't like grass or loose dirt and simply wont move on it. I've added a photo of it with bigger wheels, which make it faster and more versatile, though you ideally need to extend the axel with other parts. Would I recommend this?? Not Yet A huge amount of potential here, just not quite there yet. Maybe wait a bit until they fix the app, because its the single biggest downside to this model and if the app was better, this would definitely get thumbs up.

Build was good, car is great to look at. However driving experience awful, almost impossible to go straight and turning right. Seems that the motor is pulling the wheels permanently left. Especially disappointed with this set as was purchased for lockdown and a bit of fun in the lounge.

Just like others have expressed, the ONE virtual joystick makes this vehicle hard to control and shuts the fun door on this kit shortly after the build ends. PLEASE get rid of the unnecessary sound fx buttons and split the controls into TWO virtual joysticks like almost every R/C controller in existence.
