I haven't met a horse that wasn't thrilled to have a Likit in their stall! They are great as a generous reward, or to help keep horses busy that are stalled or just need enrichment. Most recently I used the Himalayan Salt flavor for my horse on stall rest. I put it in her Jolly Stall Snack w/ Apple Ball (#12049) and she uses it often. I have also used the apple and molasses flavors in the past and she loved them!
I had to buy a lot of these since my girl loves them. The molasses flavor is her favorite and it will be gone in 2 days if she is stalled in the morning. She will lick it out of my hand. It might not be the best for her but she loves it.
I had bought my OTTB mare a Lik-it, and at first she completely ignored it! I figured out that some horses have to be "introduced to them" so that is what we did, wet it a little, showed her where it was and let her lick my hand. Well, she still couldn't figure it out and I thought maybe she wasn't a lik-it gal. As a last ditch effort, we took the top off of the plastic holder and VOILA! She figured it out. She loved the mint and the apple flavors. If anyone is having trouble or there horse seems to ignore them, try introducing it to them and even taking the top off. She prefers it this way, but does go through it quickly!
I keep likits hanging in both my guys stall to avoid wood chewing. It has really helped, one of our guys likes the salt and the other guy likes the flavored ones.
I recently ordered the Himalayan Salt Likit Refill, and the Electrolyte Likit Refill. I prefer to offer salt and electrolytes as free choice, because overfeeding can lead to ulcer flare ups in ulcer prone horses. I also prefer the Himalayan Salt accompanied by a mineral pellet to the trace mineral blocks, as the horse tends to fulfill their desire for salt before getting the mineral intake they need. Overall, great purchase. The salt and electrolyte Likit refill tends to last one of my horses about 1-2 months in the warmer South Texas months. The candy type refills go a lot faster. :)
My horse fractured his coffin bone, and so has been confined to stall rest for several months. He normally lives outside 24/7, so to go from outside all the time to a complete standstill is tough! These help keep him occupied so he is a little bit less of a monster. I do find the packaging a bit difficult to remove, but if you cut it and then just rip it, it tends to come right off. I did notice that the molasses flavor lasted a lot longer than the mint - but I'm not sure if that's because my horse loved the mint that much more, or if it was that much softer than the molasses.
I got this for my horse at shows, and I almost lost my thumb in the process of getting it out of the plastic container. Also a lot of the stuff came off, the actual Likit is really soft and I don't feel like it'll hold up super long. But my horse really likes the taste.
Bought these himalayan salts for our ponies at our trainer and barn manager's suggestion. Cheapest way to buy the himalayan salt. Not sure what they are "refills" for, but they come with the ties and we just tie them to the stalls and our ponies are happy and nourished. Other "rock" type licks get weak and break from the string-- these stay connected until the end. Shipped with our Smartpaks. Easy. Inexpensive. Healthy. Thanks, Smartpak!
I've been buying Likits for years. My first horse loved them and was diabolical in their destruction. A molasses Likit would not even last a minute. He had demolishing them down to an art. He loved the Banana, Molasses, Honey & Chamomile, and the now retired Vanilla Rhubarb. My current horse is not quite as smart and enjoys them as well. His favorite flavors are the Banana, Garlic and Mint. His Likits tend to last 1 to 2 days. I only buy him 1 a month. Couple of tips for first time users: 1. Easiest way to remove the troublesome plastic is to use a razor/box blade and slit the plastic from bottom to top in at least four places. Then peel the plastic back and it should pop off the center. 2. In my experience every horse I've known is not a fan of the Carrot. Too many people bought that flavor and were disappointed by their horse's reaction. (Otherwise they love them all, including the Garlic) 3. Wash the Likit holder after or before refilling it, otherwise there is a nasty build up of horse grime and sticky remnants of the Likit.
My horse loves her likits (a little too much!) She usually finishes them in 20 minutes. Yup we timed her! I still buy them for her all the time because I like to spoil her but I wish they lasted longer. The Himalayan salt ones are the best! They take forever to finish and they have the most healthy ingredients. I would NOT buy them in bulk though! I thought I was getting a deal when I bought the 12 pack but its not!! They were shipped all in the same box which made it very heavy (i couldnt even lift the box). And when I opened it all my sport flavored likits were crushed! The salt ones might make it ok since they are harder but any other flavor seems to crumble under the weight of 12 other likits in the same box.
