Awesome GPS!!!!!!

Surferjo September 10, 2009

I picked the Triton 500 up when my Explorist 600 died on me. Magellan has worked out all the bugs (finally) and the Triton is now a rock solid unit. Its almost fully paperless (no logs) but that’s not a big deal for me since I use Cacheberry on my Blackberry, which can hold an unlimited about of caches BTW, very cool. The Tritons are very easy to use since they don’t have a lot of extra screens that some other GPS’r have. Pretty basic, no non-sense units. The computer software is called VantagePoint and its pretty much drag and drop. I download a 500-cache pocket query, drag it into the VantagePoint window and click the sync button. It doesn’t get any easier than that. I like it so much i picked up the Triton 1500 and now my kids use the 500. Fantastic product.

Best unit for the money

ElusiveDream March 26, 2010

Very easy to use, great for paperless geocaching. Map capabilities are unlimited with the SD card port and 32gb card capacity. Vantagepoint software included so downloading for the computer is a snap, not manual inputing! Love the unit.

Well worth the money

Niquaa March 26, 2009

I have seen all the bad reviews all over the place on this product, and have not found any of the issues that others have had to be true with mine. I have the 500, with the "South Lakes" map down load added. I use it for my pwc and it works great. If the magellan triton is not a product you have used, you WILL need to log on to the web site to learn how to use it. It does have some things in funny places if you are not used to it. The vantage point software from online is a great tool to work with the unit. This is NOT like a auto gps so don't think of if that way Dislikes: no other display on the map view, I like to see distance to destination at least on the map.

Potentially a great hiking tool.

Hardware seems good, but the CD manual is not adequate. For instance, down loading NG TOPO states maps to SD memory isn't covered. 2,4,8 or 16GB modules, of SD or SDHC is not covered. I've only had this unit for a few weeks now, and I have managed to get it up and working by "trial and error". I think Magellan has a good product but it needs a better manual.

Lots of Potential

PaulieWalnutz May 23, 2008

This is the first GPS unit I have owned. Overall I like it but there has been a bit of a learning curve with it. The base map should be called the basic map as it does not include a lot of detail. The tides and currents feature is not available yet. I was impressed with Magellan support. I actually spoke to a human. I love the electronic compass. Battery life leaves a little to be desired. For the price I am pleased. When they update the features like tides and currents this will be a great unit.

Very poor user manuel

AncientIrmese December 21, 2008

Trying to get this gps to work is very complicated. The user manuel is very elementary with little detail in how to set-up and use this device. There is practically no instructions on downloading additional maps and upgrades to maps, as a result, when attempting to download a map upgrade, I completely ruined the device requiring it to have to be returned for repair. The process to do the return was itself very difficult and inconvenient.

The Magellan Triton series might be for some but I just wanted a basic gps with trails which this unit didn't have so I purchased the Topo USA database thinking info would improve but was disappointed. Unit with database cost $335 which I felt was over priced for what the unit provided.

Bad

Golfer27 March 8, 2009

Unable to load maps and electronic compass never calibrated and would point in all directions. This thing is useless unless you just want to create a landmark and then return to it. It might work for that.

Do Not Buy

hunter60 July 22, 2009

Do Not Buy!!! I uploaded the new version of software and it froze up, I had to send back in for a new one, two weeks later I still have not received a new gps. Magellan has had my gps longer then I have. I have called them a number of times with no answers on when I will receive my replacement. And they just hung up on me the last time. Plan on buying maps for each state that are $60-$100 each and they will not even load on your gps unless you delete half your computer software and reload it in a certain order. Not user friendly at all!!! I'm only 27 and good with computers and it is hard to figure out how to use the software on this gps. Save your money and do not buy.
