I would buy this product again and again!!!!

Wrap4cash November 15, 2025

I have had aquariums for 20 years and I have gone through every filter even desinging my own canisters for affordability. These filters run amazing and last a long time with basic maintenance. If you clean it regularly the lifetime of the motor will work for years. Will buy everytime! And side note* I appreciate their quick response to some of these comments and reminding people of the three year warranty. I don't understand the low reviews on this product or brand. I assume most of the low reviews are people who don't care for their tank as much as they should in the first place.

The GOAT of HOB Filters IMHO

Gregore July 9, 2025

I've had this filter running on my 75GAL Map Turtle/Fish tank for about two years. It's a great filter right out of the box but turns into an absolute BEAST with a few tweaks. I replaced the intake basket W/a LG sponge pre-filter & drilled extra intake holes in the intake tube where it's covered by the sponge pre-filter. I also added another sponge filter in the circular intake basket at the top of the intake. Lastly I added two 2LB filter bags of ceramic media to the media area of the filter. This thing filters like a beast with these extra tweaks.

Very nice filter

Randy KB2ZVP July 10, 2021

About 1 year old. I use two of these on my 75 gal tank. I use them on my fancy goldfish tank. I love the fact that I can turn down the flow at night. I also use a large sponge filter. I know I have way more filtration then I need but with goldfish more is better then a little less. The fact that the pump is underwater is a huge benefit. We have power outages here from time to time and Im away at work from 5am to 8 pm. So with other filters that I have used if the power goes out the filter doesnt start until I get home to prime it. Not a good design! I use filter material in both the back basket and the basket thats in the bottom of the filter. Theres a huge amount of area for anaerobic bacteria. My aquarium is not overstocked with fish so Ive never had a problem with ammonia. I do grow live plants so I dont use carbon. Some people report that the bio wheels dont turn all the time. I dont find that to be an issue. Mine stop for a second or two but then start back up even when I turn down the flow. The fact is if they stopped they would still grown anaerobic bacteria. I service 1 filter each month to keep from upsetting my bacteria growth. I feel that most problems people have with these filters are not the filters fault. Maintenance is important to the filters as it is with the aquarium. Also some people put huge fish in tanks that are way to small and large fish can become aggressive and ram into things in there tanks. So in my opinion the emperor 450 is an excellent filter! I highly recommend this filter!! I am setting up two more GF aquariums for fish that I have coming from Thailand and India. Both aquariums will be fitted with emperor 450s Thank you for another great product. Randy

Solves danger issues and surprise of nice feature

H4Stewart December 2, 2024

I am in process of setting up new tank and wanted nice filtrations. At first I try a Fluval 407 and I was deeply concern of hosing and possible fires. I sis not want my dog knocking over it. I then try to twver edge Fluval filters and they would not work. So the sales persons at local Petcoo recommend this filter and I look up filter on youtube for setup and I was impressed with the features. Yes it is larger but can do alot more than expected included the 407. I planned to duplicate this setup include Fliter XAtream 5000 and NuCrew dual Hyperreef 150''s next year. love that you can control the speed.Only issue I had on the my 60 was that the extra intake tube would not fit It would nice as option for smaller one but I skip it and it workj with out a charm. One recommendation I have that came from video on my lights is to put your filteration on UPS Battery backup. This should resolved some of negative reviews I have seeen. Also I planned to get jmy sister husband to make special made flexiglass cover once I setup all hardware.

the good and the bad

thirsty September 21, 2021

I purchased three 450 filters from Pet Smart to see if they were an impovement over the 400's I've been using . One worked perfedtly. Great water flow whels a spinning and inserts doing their job! Two not so good. One pumped very little water. Had to have it wide open to get any water on to the wheels. After about a week of working it simply stopped. When disassebled the impeller ois completely mossing from the shaft ( Haven't found it yet. Motor seems seized up. Put a new one on wnd the same problem with the water flow. Had to partially block the water feeding on to the wheels in order to get any reasonable flow through the main filter media Not the quality I have had for years with Marineland equipment! The one which works is super!

concerned January 16, 2026

my wife and daughter bought me an 75 gallon aquarium for father's day, and by Christmas, this 450 filter just stopped working. Water levels maintained, just stopped. Bought at petsmart, so they say to call manufacturer. So now going through this ordeal

Not built strong enough

Jimb November 24, 2025

Bought the 450 about 5 years ago and it worked fine except the back started bulging out. Now it's so bad the filters will not stay in place. Material is too weak for a filter this large.

Great filter...........at first!

ron76 February 15, 2021

Bought 2 of these a little less than 2 months ago for my 100 gallon tank. Both worked great until a few weeks ago when one started making horrible loud gurgling noises so I checked and no spray bar for wheel although lower water output still works. Called and was told to disassemble and reassemble so I told him I had already done that...Guy named Scott was rude and offered no help except send them in and in the meantime leave several hundred dollars in fish in tank with no filtration. Hmmmmm never again marineland..BTW second filter has now started this horrible noise

bad

albertopepe November 3, 2022

well I bought this filter emperor 450 and I really do not recommend it and I would like to know what kind of guarantee it has I will explain a little the engineer who invented the motor fell asleep before finishing it how it is possible that he has put the cable outlet with a hole to which Water got in and caused a short circuit. Thank God I was at home and I was able to disconnect from the current and it didn't go any further. Well in short I want to know if you can replace the motor.
