After buying almost exclusively from the “other” online behemoth for quite a while, and repeatedly wanting to pull my hair out over its apparent inability to get me what I actually ordered without sending a completely different item, a used item, a leaking item, a broken item, a dirty item, or some other variation of “What on earth is THIS?” I have come to appreciate Walmart more and more! In fact, I've pretty much re-fallen in love with both their grocery service and their other online offerings. ...This cake, however, had delivery issues (arrived upside down and mostly icing-free), and more importantly, I feel I must report, is an imposter 😊. It SAYS it's a Tres Leches cake, it's wearing some of the icing of a Tres Leches cake, and heck, even its scent hints at a Tres Leches cake. Unfortunately, the defining TRES (uno, dos, tres) LECHES appear to be glaringly absent. What remains, is pretty much a rectangular stack of dryness. The texture reminds me less of Tres Leches cake and more of, well... cornbread. Now, being the half alchemist, half scientist, half chef I think I am (hey, I never said I was a mathematician), and already being approximately $15 invested in this baked good with an obvious identity crisis, I figured there was no sense surrendering without an experiment. Soooo, I bought some heavy cream, evaporated milk, and sweetened condensed milk separately, and decided to supply the missing “TRES” myself. I poked holes throughout the cake, mixed my three milks, and slowly poured the mixture over it to give that poor thirsty rectangle the hydration that it had apparently been denied. THAT made an enormous difference. Once properly soaked, the cake became softer, richer, and much closer to what I had expected when I bought something with the words “Tres Leches” printed on the package. Note that it was way more appetizing that the picture dictates 😋. What remained of the icing after its encounter with 'delivery driver with better things to do', was good, and the cake itself transformed from dry to spongy. From the shelf, or should I say out of delivery bag, it was missing the very thing that makes Tres Leches cake, a Tres Leches cake ... the Tres Leches. So, can it be rescued? Absolutely. Should I have to purchase the three leches separately and perform a dairy transfusion on a $15 Tres Leches cake? Probably not. As sold, I can't say I'd buy it again, but, with my little kitchen intervention, we managed to turn the Great Cornbread Imposter into a pretty darn good dessert. Walmart, I love ya... but somebody forgot to milk the cake. 😂
