"Take Control" was the right tagline

Rockman1138 July 11, 2009

Besides telling a new story in the Halo saga, the point of this game was to prove that the real-time strategy could work as well on consoles as on PCs. "Command & Conquer 3" came close in its controls, Koei's "Bladestorm" had great depth in its action-tactics, and "Endwar" had a breakthrough innovation with voice commands, but this is the game that really lays the foundation. It's hard to explain just why it succeeds so thoroughly at this; I can only say that this is the only console RTS where I have felt truly in control of what's happening all over the battlefield, as much as when I play Warcraft 3 or Red Alert 2 on PC. Judging it on its RTS merits alone, it still stands up tall. There's only one campaign, but it delivers a satisfying experience by making each mission unique. Unit/tech trees are simple but deep enough to support varied strategic approaches. Both large and small scale combat encounters happen at a pace that lets you exercise complete tactical control. Multiplayer maps vary from simple to intricate, offering a variety of shapes for the battle to take, whether you're playing 1v1 or 3v3, and balance is nearly perfect. If you thought this was game was supposed to be another shooter, you weren't paying attention. If you own a 360 and like to use your higher-level thought processes, you owe it to yourself to get this game.

Excellent

AnkokuMusoku October 16, 2009

I find that the game is excellent for people who are die-hard Halo fans, or just the normal RTS player. It does take some time to get used to, however overal once you start playing you should enjoy it.

Not good as hyped up

LJ94 March 27, 2009

I enjoy this game but I think it was hyped up way too much. I was thinking that it would be a really long game. The achements are not great. One of them is playing the game for 24 hours. Thats kinda saying if you want points you need to play this game and some people get a little carzy when it comes to gamerscore. Overall this is an ok game.

It's what he wanted

ImMomItMatters April 15, 2009

Got it for my son for his Birthday. He says he loves it. I didn't think that it was animated like Halo. I have noticed that he plays the original Halo more still.

Unfinished mediocrity

CheGuevara March 9, 2009

The biggest disappointment about this game is its length. 15 years ago Blizzard came up with Warcraft. There were 2 campaigns - Humans and Orcs. 10 years ago - Starcraft, 3 campaigns. 5 years ago - Warcraft 3 with 4 campaigns. This year 2009 Microsoft released Halo Wars with whooping 1 (one) campaign of about a dozen missions! What's up with that?! You create unfinished, unpolished, tiny game, throw it at the wall and expect people to shell out $60 for it because it is related to legendary franchise?! I paid $25 at a company store, and still feel like I overpaid. Now to gory details Pros: + It's about Halo + Awesome cinematics. + Great graphics for 2009 standards. It is 2009, you expect great graphics of an RTS. + Good controls. Work pretty well for a console. I was kinda missing ability to select all units of a given type, but it's OK. + You don't need to hunt for resources that quickly deplete. (do you see anything above that says $60?) Cons: - super-short. You beat it in 6 hours on Normal. For $60, I want to waste a couple of weeks of my time in front of my XBox! - Lack of thought-through design you see in Blizzard games. Forget the BS about paper, rock, scissors, most of the units there remain unused. You only build a couple of most efficient unit types unless you want to drag the game forever. - You are only able to build structures in the waffle, provided by the base. Seems like implementation-driven design, MS found it easier to do so. Forget about surrounding your base with custom ring of fortifications. - There is no dynamics of the unit types you can build. You can build them all from early levels up, but, I reiterate, you simply don't care.

I chose this game with as a bonus to the xbox360 package that I got for my son. As a bonus game, it was definitely a good deal, but my son was a bit disappointed. He said HaloWars is not anything like Halo3. Completely different. But someone who has not played the other Halos' may like this one. Futuristic space game.
