The Midland handheld is the must have trail ride commo gear -bar none. I have this mounted on my Polaris RZR Trail rig, and it is the only way to go. I have a 3 foot fiberglass top loaded whip and I get plenty of range, up to about 5 miles. CB is still the standard as far as being able to tell the rest of the riders things like close the gate, or don't miss the wild burros on the left, or let's stop and eat. A lot of motorcycle riders get good use of them also, and just about any motorsport application you can think of. The real trick is the ability to go to the dismount in about 30 seconds. You can motor up a trail, quickly go from vehicle power to handheld portable to stay in contact when on foot. This little radio is a lifesaver to many who have used it. The online resale value is very good also. Just in case you quit riding, and you need to sell some stuff, just something to think about. But yes, it's a super radio. If you have the means, I recommend picking one up.
Midland has always come out with some excellent products and this little handheld is no exception. I am 59 years old and have been around C.B. radio's since I was a little boy and have been talking on them for over 50 years. Technology has come a long way from when handheld radio's were 3 handfuls now down to near palm size. I have also been a HAM operator for almost 15 years. This radio has some very good features on it especially the weather band included with it, plus the fact that you can use it strictly as a handheld with batteries or you can detach the battery case and attach the power cord and C.B. antenna combo cord. and use it in your vehicle with a outside antenna. I don't know of any other company that has this feature and if you are looking for compact, look no further because this is it. I purchased this radio for my 2006 Yamaha V Star 1100 for when I go on road trips and a RAM Mount from the Mount Guys that I purchased on Amazon that is designed especially for this radio.. Both have preformed great but keep in mind that this product IS NOT WATERPROOF so if you ride a Bike, hopefully it will be on a clear sunny day but you might also consider taking a heavy duty freezer bag with you to help protect it from moisture just in case. There are a couple of bike "add on" radio systems on the market that cost several hundred dollars and are very good systems if you can afford them but if your looking for a less expensive way to go, I highly recommend this little jewel for short distance talk with the rubber duckie antenna or add a vehicle mount antenna for longer distance. What ever you decide, good luck in your purchase. Mike-- kd5ete
This is a full feature CB with lots of extras for the price. I'm very happy with it! I travel with groups of friends and we can talk to each other while driving.
It arrived in the estimated time. The 3 options for power supply fit tight and look good. The flexible whip antenna is not flexible and only reaches about 100 yards. I installed on the Harley with the headset and PTT microphone. The VOX activated mic feature does not work with this radio. The headset does not fit well inside my full helmet but with the microphone head strap removed, works OK in the half helmet. It is not waterproof. The squelch has no flexibility and if you don't set it just a little high, it pops on and off while you are driving. I installed a Harley whip antenna on the bike and replaced the connector plug to mate with the antenna connector on the 12 volt power supply (difficulty is a 1 on a 10 scale). Plugged it in and was able to have clear comms with others over 6 miles away (line of sight). Was advised to operate on the low power setting to avoid conflict with other groups on the same frequency. The rechargeable battery pack feature is nice & I keep that charged, just in case. Overall, a satisfactory purchase. Good quality, reasonably priced, solid, well made unit. I'm impressed with the improvements since my 1980's vintage Maxom. Add a real antenna, plug into your 12 v vehicle power, cover with a baggie, engineer a reliable handle bar mount, and bam, your talking.
I gave this CB radio 4 stars instead of 5 for transmitter strength (lack of). It performs well for it's intended use, which for me is portable/temporary use in a commercial truck. If there is a problem on the road, I can use it to hear details from other drivers. I can't be heard by other CB users when using the supplied mini whip antenna, but when I connect the radio to the truck's antenna using the supplied screw on connector, it transmits fine. Since I purchased the radio mostly for listening, I'm pleased with it. I also like the portability and form factor.
shipped very quickly. This CB comes equipped with lots of options for power, although I will likely use the cigarette lighter type option, there is a battery attachment and another rechargeable battery attachment. The belt clip on the back is removable. Works well so far.
Probably one of the best handheld CBs left on the market. Reception range with the included rubber duck antenna is useless, so plan on buying a 27" telescoping antenna. More testing to be done with the 27". I bought 2 units. The attached 6 alkaline cell holder was VERY difficult to slide off on one unit; it needed some lubricant and persistent wiggling. Once it came off, it was fine thereafter. One of my units may have been a return or refurb, as it came with the 1-40 L & H channels. So someone may have modded it (or it was intended for export?). Just to be safe, check your unit for signs of use when it arrives, both of mine looked brand spanking new. So far I'm happy with it and would buy it again as long as I can't get a Magnum 1012/Albrecht AE2990. :)
The radio works OK for short range transmissions. It works better hooked up in a vehicle, of course, than when portable, but that is all that I wanted.
Lot of versatility with this radio as it can be used with most any vehicle setup. However, mine had defective displacy. Couldn't read the numbers. Returned and bought again. 2nd one is OK. CB portion is just that ... CB ... breaker / breaker good buddy. Good for Jeep rides and convoys with others. That's it. When used with extra purchase vehicle roof-top antenna (with BNC connector) the range isn't bad. (5-6 miles) With rubber duck antenna, maybe you can get 1 mile range. The built-in National Weather Service radio portion is 'fantastic'. Super sensitive and can pick up weather channels as far away as 100 miles ... Prescott to Phoenix.
As a radio, it works great as a weather radio. As for a CB for communication. It picks up the engine noise and can't hear anyone that is within range.
