I bought this as well as the x-talker handhelds about a month ago for driving with family out in the desert. The radio sounds very clear and the range is great. Definetly worth the purchase. Just waiting for the rest of my friends to buy into the system too
This Radio is fantastic! It is extremely small but performs almost as well as my ham radio. My Jeep club is doing a side by side comparison of ham, CB and GMRS radios to make a decision on what to use on trips. This radio is is the way to go for any off road groups looking for a communication system, it will blow CB away.
I bought this for use in my jeep on the trails, a buddy has one from China in his Jeep, this thing walks all over him, he could hear me loud and clear 7 miles away with lots of terrain in the way but couldn't come close to reaching me, and it works with my handhelds perfectly, I can hear them out to about 4 miles, I think I'll get a 40 watt next and put this in the side by side.
I am very pleased with Midland Products. As a shop owner and off-roader I was looking for a radio solution for me and my customers that wasn't going to break the bank. We were trying to get away from CB radios. So we all got together and bought the 115 and some 2 ways. Man they work awesome! Not sure about the 20 miles. We got about 3 miles away and then it got a little staticky after that. Still very pleased!
I've had the radios for about a week now. They are installed in Jeep Wranglers with the 3db ghost antenna. We live in very hilly central PA, and can communicate approximately 7 miles radio to radio. I have connected with repeaters about 27 miles away! I have ordered a 3db whip antenna from another vendor in hopes of getting better radio to radio communications in the hills and city. Over all we are happy with these. They blow CB radios out of the water, and are perfect for trail communications.
I have two of these installed. One in my car, and one set up as a base station at my house with an outdoor antenna. Great range, and I'm able to keep in touch with my daughter when she's out and about in the neighborhood using a little HT. I already have a third radio on the way for a second vehicle.
I bought this radio for use on the trail and initial impressions are very good. One of my favorite features is the small size; it allows you to mount the radio just about anywhere. I also like the ease of setting up repeaters. We have several GMRS repeaters here in Tucson and I've been able to hit them all. I haven't tested the limits but I've regularly been hitting a repeater 15 miles away. I have it paired with Midlands 6db antenna and mag NMO mount which seems to work well. The SWR on it showed 1.04 without any extra tuning or fiddling. The menu interface is hard to follow since all menu options are abbreviated to 2 letters. I find that I don't go into the menu enough to have them memorized so I keep the manual handy. Another con is the mount for the microphone does not come with screws, only adhesive. I found my microphone on the floor of my truck after one day in the Arizona sun. I quickly remedied the problem with a self tapping screw. I also would have preferred a channel knob on the unit itself instead of buttons on the microphone. Aside from those few minor items the radio is great!
Compact, easy to setup. Has good range with the antenna kit. (Not the one that came with it). Speaker is loud and clear. Pretty easy when you know all the buttons. Biggest downside for me is that the buttons that go along the bottom of the unit do not illuminate. So if you're in the dark and don't remember what button does what, it can be difficult. But overall for the price the unit has done well.
I've had my MTX115 just under a month. I have not yet had time to do any long range tests. Working from my vehichle in the garage, I was able to reach my freind, from a distance of about 5 miles. Not bad, for being inside, plus in the city. Looking forward to getting some use in the woods soon.
I love the size. It has decent reception and is mostly easy to use. It is cheap and small and unlike most GMRS mobile radios it does not need to be programed with a computer to work. My major complaint is that for repeaters, it must do the same TX/RX codes. As a result this radio can only use 1/3rd of repeaters in my area since most have a code to activate the repeater but no code to listen to the repeater. This radio would get 5 stars if it had two software updates: 1. It needs separate TX/RX repeater codes. 2. It should show the actual codes displayed on the radio screen instead of a number that represents the code.
