Delivered two days ago. I love it so far. Keeps water unfrozen but not too warm. My horses dont seem to like water that is too warm. My mare Walked right up to it and drank. Not sure about my gelding Ill keep an eye on him.
We have a pasture with 3 horses and 3 40 gallon unheated troughs, and had been using 2 heated 6 gallon buckets for our mixed weather Georgia winters with constant refills. I swapped this for one of our 6 gallons, and the horses have found their new favorite. It sits on the ground like the troughs, about the size of a muck bucket, and it is now always the first emptied. So happy to have a reliable warm water source during the sub freezing nights.
I had bought a competitor's product with heating element inside the bucket. I noticed my horse started to lap water like a dog. I replaced the bucket with this one and my horse is back to drinking normally. I believe the other bucket was leaking a small amount of electricity, which my horse could perceive. The heating element in this bucket is sealed, so there's no risk of this happening. Also the cord is longer and better protected (metal spring vs plastic). I will never purchase any other brands.
I've had several of these buckets for the last 5 or 6 years. They do an excellent job keeping the water warm during the winter months. Not too warm but certainly warmer than the water in the unheated auto waterer. They've held up fairly well. We've had to replace the plugs several times because the barn employees are tough on them, they want to yank on the cord instead of holding the plug when they pull the cord from the socket. Other than the plugs, I usually expect to get about 3 years use out of them. I really like the fact the heater is on the outside of the bucket, located inside a compartment on the bottom. Does do some damage to the cover when the bucket full of water is dragged across cement in order to empty and clean. Not sure if it would be better if the compartment was on the side, but that might be a hazard for the horse. I've used the other type where the heating element was inside the bucket and there were lots of problems . Compartment
Love this heated water tub! I had the same one for 25+ years before it needed replacing. I had trouble finding this particular one, so I bought another brand, that has the heating element in the bucket. It wasn't as easy to clean and it kept the water too warm! My horses wouldn't drink from it. I was SO happy when I found that Smart Pak had one of these in stock, so I bought it right away and it arrived quickly. I love this size because I only have one horse and one pony and I like to change the water daily, and this allows me to easily do so. It keeps the water above freezing but not warm. Horse and pony approved!
I bought 5his before the last snow storm at a low of 13 degrees. It worked well. This storm got down to 5 degrees. It still worked, no ice and the temperature was comfortable. I have them for my horses and for our dogs when we are outside. I am very pleased with this heated bucket. Sipping was good too. I find it works just as well as the green ones if you are wondering.
We had to replace a damaged bucket (it had stood up to 5 hard NH winters and 4 tough New England Equine before giving in!). It's not something I choose to do without!
Year after year we use these out in the fields. They only use 200 watts and horses consume more water. The electric is concealed unlike other similar ones and never allows an electric shock like happened to us with another brand. Love these!
I waited until bitter cold to write this review--not only has this water bucket eliminated the need to chop ice, I am assured my horses are never without water. I now see each horse drinks 8-10gal/day, and because water temperature is maintained, they continue to hydrate (IMPORTANT-horses that drink less due to freezing water can run risk of colic). In addition, this bucket has solid walls yet smooth inside--helps reduce algae AND easy to clean, unlike a cheaper model with clunky heating element inside the bottom of the bucket! I removed all 5gal hanging buckets and keep this one on stall floor in the corner -- works so well I may continue when summer comes to save from back-breaking lifting.
I don't have heated waterers in the pasture my horse and donkey are in so I got this to not have to fill up the small green heated buckets as often. Funnily enough even when it isn't freezing outside my horse seems to drink out of this more often I think the because of the blue color. I have had for about a month and it seems to be working well. It is a great size.
