It seemed to help. Used this on old, cracked and weathered porch furniture. Used a dark walnut stain and it showed grain nicely. You still need to sand the piece before using this conditioner.

The Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner was the perfect solution for a hand rail using new pine wood. I first tried a pine wood sample with Minwax "English Chestnut" stain. The soft wood instantly absorbed the stain producing an uneven spotty black. This problem was solved by using Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner that changed the stain color to the correct warm brown finish. The best part was how easy it was to apply with a rag and then only wait 5-15 minutes before wiping with a clean cloth.

I have yet to try this wood stain, and that's why I gave it only 4 stars. I have seen other wood stains where you do not have to purchase the wood stain conditioner, and the polyurathane coating which is the final, and 3rd process of using this stain, all sold seperately. I may try to find it if Walmart doesn't carry it. Throughout my journey of purchasing paints, stains, or even textured paint through Walmart has not been a pleasant shopping experience. I normally don't give negative reviews, and only review what I have used, and the outcome. I am wanting to use this on miniatures I make using wood in Barbie size scale which is 1:6 scale. I also wanted to use this stain on the trim of a 54" custom dollhouse made out of Birch wood on the trim. I would be willing to report back on how this stain turns out if Walmart would be so kind to allow me to rate it after I try it.. I have high expectations for this quality stain since the wood of the dollhouse cost over $900.00 alone.
