My kids (6 year old daughter and 8 year old son) LOVED this! They liked the booklet it came with to use to identify the 15 different gems/rocks/crystals. We used the tool it came with plus a little spray bottle to mist it now and then. They had no problems getting the rocks out by themselves.
First, our kids loves mining all of the gemstones out of the digging brick. There are 15 gemstones included, and they were nice quality. The educational content was my favorite part, there is a guide that explains what all of the different gemstones are. Great kit!
My 5 year old great granddaughter loved it. Sadly she was disappointed when the desert stone was missing. They live in Arizona and would have been special to her. Good news is that the missing stone helped her learn subtraction.
I bought this for myself, because I love rock and gem dig kits. I've done a number of these in the past, and while they all took a while, they were all worth the money I spent, and the time and effort I put into them. So I had high hopes for this one, especially since it's from National Geographic. But the very first gem I uncovered basically resembled a piece of rough glass. It broke clean in half before I even had it all the way out. The second one was caked in the plaster, I was worried I'd brake it if I tried to scrape or chip the plaster off. I've tried getting them wet in the past, hoping to soften the plaster. But all it did was make it messier. I would return it, except for the fact the store most likely won't take it back once it's been dug into, because they can't re-sell it. I would not recommend buying this unless you can find it for a much, much cheaper price.
