Installed using my router connection and not the USB connection through my computer though I did download the drivers to my laptop so I can use a phone on the go if needed. Setup was quick and easy, just a short process at netTalk's website. It is important that you complete the e911 registration or they will cancel your account at the end of the month. An added bonus over MagicJack is that it is fax capable and also there are apps for most smartphones so you can link to the device rather than burning up your plan's minutes. Downside is that you can't migrate your old phone number to the service, a number will be assigned to you. So far, so good; am very satisfied with this product.
Simple installation; clear calls. Minimal glitches: Not a true duplex; switches kind of like a speaker-phone. Slight delay between speaking and hearing. Occasional echo. Poor customer service, but considering the monetary savings... $30/year with long distance beats the fool out of $43/mo without long distance. Limited exchange (local prefix/city [the 3 digits in the middle]) number availability. In order to gat a local number it was necessary to port my old land-line number. This only took a week and was my original intention. Must always dial all 10 digits, including local numbers. Two ways to access voice-mail, i.e. *98 and via e-mail. I set-up a new e-mail address just for this. Just make sure that your high speed internet connection is active.
Was very exited to find a product that would provide phone service with added features, so inexpensively. Had no installation problems, and it does work. Occasionally you need to dial out a second time; incoming callers occasionally have to redial to get through-not a major issue for the price. The caller ID displays the caller's name "in quotes", with the number but no time and date information is sent to the phone. You can set the time and date on many phones manually to correct that. The call forwarding works well; you set the number(s) online, making sure you format them as 1-000-000-0000. Once set, your calls will forward to the next number(s) after several rings. By accident, I found I can use the "Do Not Disturb" feature as a means to turn immediate call forwarding on and off. You turn it on by pressing *65 (on), and *66 (off), actually easier than the phone company. There is no "ring splash" when calls are forwarded with the “Do Not Disturb” mode, so you don't get a reminder if you forget to turn it off. I have successfully sent faxes, but before trying set the modem speed to maximum 9600 bps. That was no problem, either. The call quality is adequate, but with my unit anything that is louder than usual cuts out. This brings me to why I would not be able to recommend this product. You need to submit a trouble ticket for any problems. Their computer responds to the trouble ticket, stating they will get back to you. They don't. You simply receive another email three weeks later stating: "Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We do apologize for the delay: We are currently working on improving our response times. If the issue has been resolved please ignore this response: If you are still having an issue please respond to this trouble ticket. Please refrain from making a new ticket as this will cause a further delay." This morning, I could not make or receive calls for about an hour; reason unknown. The green light just kept blinking, and turned red if I tried to make a call. None of NetTalk’s online troubleshooting procedures even mention the blinking green light condition. Resetting the Duo and the router did not solve the problem-it just started working again on its own, about 45 minutes later. For the most part, if this device is working properly, you'd be fine. If it fails, you're on your own and will likely be waiting a VERY long time to have a phone again if you wait for them to help. Having a cell phone in addition to this is a MUST. I just don't feel it's dependable.
This product was much better than MagicJack Plus for as long as it worked. The firmware in the NetTalk - the programming that makes it go - is much more professionally designed than is that in MagicJack Plus, and the NetTalk setup and activation procedure is as simple as it possibly could be made considering NetTalk is of necessity a complex product. MagicJack Plus's sloppily designed firmware should be an acute professional embarrassment to its builders. Unlike MagicJack Plus, NetTalk does not need to be plugged into a computer to be activated. Hence the activation will leave no garbageware behind that can only help to constipate your computer for evermore. A computer is of course needed for doing the Nettalk setup on the Nettalk website. In my use of the NetTalk before it failed, I found the quality to be impressive indeed. I wondered how they could possibly offer so much good functionality for such a low price, and I now found out. I have not yet attempted to get the NetTalk replaced.
It installed just fine, worked.. but noisy. Then 6 weeks into using the netTalk II Duo it dropped my conversation and caused the Internet to go down. Unpluged it, the Internet came back. Pluged it in the Internet went down again. AT&T repair said it was sending out a strange signal that caused their ADSL router to shut down. I cannot get netTalk technical support to respond. I purchased two years of time after just one week of use. Now I cannot use it at all. Can't get a replacement from the company, can't get my 2 years I purchased back. Not happy.
When I received this, I set it up that evening. The website to activate it wouldn't go through, it kept saying it was unable to activate at this time, please try again later. all the numbers to contact them were disconnected. I was able to call out on the netTalk, but...it came up as some weird out of state number that when they tried to call me back to check it out, it took them to a POWER COMPANY! this is junk and has been returned! I was very disappointed.
I couldn't make phone calls, when i make a phone call, i can't hear anything, it was silence, dead silence, I returned the first one and got a new one, the same thing happened, so i returned it again and got my money back, no i wouldn't recommend this product to anyone! It was a waste of time!
I did everything on my part and it wouldn't kick me out a phone number. I tried every means of customer support. Waited over an hour on hold over the phone and couldn't get a reply through email till a week later. By then I just returned the product. Wal mart was very good about the return process.
What a piece of garbage. First the number I got would not only ring to my NetTalk but also to another person 3000 miles from me to there NetTalk. Customer service is useless. Second after getting a number that was finally only for me and not me and a person across the country sharing a line it only worked for 14 days and now when you call the number says "This number is out of service". I've given up and will just take my loss. I could have used this money for something else but now I have a paperweight. Avoid if you can not worth the hassle, time or money.
After hooking up nettalk to computer and logging into their site, it informed me my nettalk doesn't work in my area code. I could chose from other area codes but it would not work with the 911 service and it would affect my calling zones. What good is it if I can't use the product where I live? And the website could have mentioned that you have to make sure the device is available in your area. Instead I waited a week for it to arrive, picked up at the store, went through the steps to connect, had to disconnect and return to the store. What a waste of time, money and gas.
