I purchased this item before Christmas 2025 and so far it has not disappointed me. I love it and my husband loves it too. I will recommend it to anyone else!
We purchased this due to our remodel. We needed a smaller trash can. Also had to be pet proof since my dog loves to get in garbage. It is nice that the lid opens and closes when you motion above it. Also seems that we can get more trash in than my old trash can.
I ordered this trash can on Prime under instruction from my wife. I was under the impression that online was the only place I could find this trash can in black. Feeling uneasy about being able to return it... after reading reviews. ... I Googled it and saw it was at Walmart for 10 bucks cheaper. I canceled the Prime order. In 3 days it was on my door for free. I no longer cared what the reviews said because I knew my mother-in-law could easily return it if it broke. She has been using for a week now and she loves it. It amazes me that people need an automatic door on a garbage can... but if that floats your boat... baby this is your deal. After inspecting the can myself I saw no flaws and it worked perfectly..... however... I can see how the amazement of people or children might needlessly overwork this garbage can from its entertainment value.
I ordered this as a gift for a friend and it arrived even earlier than what they stated. I researched several other Stainless Steel Trash Cans and read the reviews on them, and this one seem to be a top hit. He is VERY happy with this product purchase. It has a classy look and the sensor works great so far.
I had this model for 3 years. I took out the very reasonable 3 year extended warranty and got my money back when it died. This can is very well made and I expect this can to last at least 5 years. I can toss in a dripping coffee filter just by waving my elbows so this can is the only trash can type I ever plan on using.
Costco sells a similar one for about the same price, but it is 30 gallon. That sounds like a "deal," but it is so big it crowds out the kitchen, and, it holds so much (the 30 gallon one) that it sits there extra days, and smells up the room. The 13 gallon one is better! Also, when you get it, there is a black plastic ring that sits on top of the can before putting the electric opener on top of it. I didn't see where it says this, but, put the bag in the can hanging about 3 inches over the edge, THEN the black ring on the can. Pull the bag overhang back INTO the bag, then put the top on. It ENTIRELY HIDES the top edge of the bag! No "sloppy shirt-tail" look from a bag hanging out on the can. This makes your kitchen look much neater! Yep! Get the Walmart one, not the Costco one that is too big.
I have a stainless one that I received as a Christmas gift 4 years ago and still have not had to change the batteries!!!! Hard to believe, but true. I bought the black one (same brand, same size) to use for recycling, as I have twice the amount as I do for trash, and the color change makes it much easier for grandkids and guests to distinguish between the two. Much nicer than having boxes or sacks on my floor to collect recycling. It holds two paper grocery sacks....fill one at the bottom and add the second one stacked on top. Perfect! They are sitting side by side in my kitchen and match my black, white, and stainless kitchen. Same brands for both so I was able to use the plastic rim (which got lost in the trash) on the stainless one. I prefer this new one to my stainless one due to the fact that it is not nearly as sensitive to motion. It stays closed until it needs to be opened. The metal does not seem quite as heavy as the other one which doesn't matter to me. I'm a happy camper and am anxious to see if the batteries last as long in this one!!! Highly recommend to everyone.
I've had three of these and that should tell you something; I like them and they don't last forever, maybe four years. This one is a duplicate of the old one which stopped retracting after opening. I disassembled it and found nothing obviously wrong. Moved all the connections and reassembled it. Worked again for one day. Bought new one. If you can stand one that is a teeny bit smaller, Costco has it now (7/29/14) for $50 + tax.
After receiving the replacement due to the battery breaking, I realized the quality is not the same. I have owned a Nine Stars automatic trash can for at least five years and have no problems with it when replacing batteries in the lid. However, I noticed this model's plastic is much, much hard. When pushing the release lever in to remove the battery backing, the lever breaks. It happened twice. So you can either tape the battery back on and hope it holds or select another brand.
When we got it the lid was very small to put garbage in. The cover for holding the batteries fell off instantly after the first use. The batteries came out into the garbage and so did the cover. We had no idea until after garbage man already came and took the bag away. So now holding new batteries in with tape and they don't stay well. Trash can very easy to get messy since lif so small. The motion sensor to open lid is cool, but not worth buying this garbage can for.
