After raising my family I have returned to school after 30 years. I love it! I have an Olympus VN-8100PC Voice Recorder which I record the Lectures. You can use this recorder without earphones. The sound is loud and clear. Better than Sony. Anyway, I use the Transcription Kit to transcribe my notes. You can use any recording device; just so you are able to transfer the Audio File to your Computer. The Transcriber works with Audio Files that are stored on your Computer. You do not need anything special for this Transcriber. It comes with everything. It plugs into your Computer with either a USB Port or a Serial Port. Both are supplied for you. It comes with a nice stereo head set. You can listen and work with the Transcriber with or without the Headset. The Headset simply plugs into your Computer. The Software that comes with the Transcriber is easy to install and work with. I use Microsoft Word. I open Word and type my notes out while the Transcriber works independently and simultaneously with Word. It is so easy to work with. You can control the speed and the different sound 'values'. I have never used one of these machines before. It is easy and I am saving lots of money doing the transcription myself. You can save your work and return to finish it later. It is so convenient and easy. With the finished transcribed notes I can easily pick up the 'notes' that I missed in class. I can see it all. I also use my Voice Recorder to play outloud while I am working in the kitchen, or around the house, driving, or just sitting. So I have the benefit to Hear my Lectures and Read my Lectures over as many times as I need or wish to. Note: I did buy the Olympus WS-710M Voice Recorder but the Speaker is smaller and you cannot hear the Audio as well. That was very disappointing as it is a powerful and nice Voice Recorder; better than any MP3 Player. The Sony Voice Recorders sound is not as good as the Olylmpus. I like the Olympus VN-8100PC Voice Recorder. It has 2 GB of memory. You can transfer your Audio to the Computer AND back to the Recorder. This is very important. You can also play Music Files (any Audio Files) on it. The Recorder cost was $59.00. I not only listen to my Lectures but I also listen to other Audio; e.g. Sermons, etc. You would not be disappointed with the Olympus Transcription Kit. And you will also love the Olympus VN-8100PC Voice Recorder. But remember, any Voice Recorder should work as you use the Audio Files that are saved on your Computer. Also, you can adjust or change the settings on the foot pedal. For some reason, the Reverse was on the Right side of the foot pedal, and the Forward was the Left side of the Pedal. I changed my settings so that to use the Reverse it is on the Left side of Pedal and the Forward is on the Right side of the Pedal. The change was simply made by going to the top to the Menu Bar and making the simple change. You can always change back if you want.
