Love this Underrated High Value Tablet!

brassy September 1, 2020

While I am neither a coder nor a developer, when it comes to Android, I'd say I qualify as a power user. I have owned a ton of Android tablets and phones in the $200 to $600 price range. I customize them to my liking and if the stock operating system is too laggy or laden with bloatware, I'll install a custom rom, or a series of roms. This doesn't make me an expert, but I'm not a noob, either. I've owned my share of Samsungs, LGs, etc., but I prefer to buy lesser-known "value" brands such as Xiaomi, Huawei and OnePlus which offer a greater array of features and better build quality for my money. Well, the onn™ 8 Tablet Pro definitely offers value -- it costs 50% less than any of my previous devices and for the price, it's packed with features. It's got more than enough processing power and ram for multimedia, general use and light gaming. The display is bright and clear. The build quality is very solid. And the battery on my unit consistently exceeded 10 hours of use over two weeks of daily testing. Early word-of-mouth positioned this deviceas a competitor to Amazon's Fire Tablet and I guess that's true given the price -- but to my mind, it blows the Fire Tablet out of the water. I'm not an Amazon hater either. I like Prime Video. I own a Kindle and a Fire Stick. But I don't want to live in Amazon's ecosystem and that's what owning a Fire Tablet feels like -- there are too many ads and too much prioritizing of Amazon's products for me to feel at home. And while I could root a Fire Tablet, the build quality doesn't merit that much effort. Bear in mind, this review is for the onn™ 8 Tablet Pro with the metal body, not the entry level model. PROS: • Android 10 -- it's Stock Android, as in seriously naked, no bloatware whatsoever, so no need to root.Well, you may ask, what about the "Favorites" button linked to preloaded Walmart apps? Guess what? Every one of them can be individually disabled via its "Info" tab. For example, I got rid of the Sam's Club app because there isn't one near my house, but kept Walmart's retail/grocery app in favorites. (You can also disable Google Apps you don't use -- I did!) • Headphone Jack (Yay!) • USB C • Very loud speakers • Stellar battery life. I consistently got over 10 hours watching videos, browsing and listening to podcasts and audiobooks -- 12 on most days. When I just let it sit without having to disable bluetooth or wifi beforehand, it was still more than half charged 48 hours later! • Perfect screencasting -- instant connection to my Sony and Samsung TVs as well as my HP Tablet, and ultra-stable. • Superb wifi signal (The Onn wifi currently shows 17 available networks whereas the most any of my other devices shows is 13). • Build Quality. This is a solid tablet, with a matte black metal case that doesn't show fingerprints. • 32G storage -- most adequate, given the lean OS, plusa micro SD slot. • Screen Quality. The resolution, brightness and color balance are just right without any adjustments. There is no flex to the screen and no light bleeding out at the edges. • Walmart's 30-day return policy on tablets -- most retailers only given you 14. If by chance you get a lemon (quality control isn't what it used to be anywhere these days), switch it for a fresh one. I always use my electronics the moment I get them home and running them 24/7 for a few days so potential issues surface in time to exchange them if need be. CONS: • Packaging. I don't give a hoot for packaging, myself, but given the preponderance of "unboxing" videos I suspect onn™ products might be perceived better if the box wasn't seriously ugly. The graphics are poor and the background is such an icky yellow I thought it was white that got dirty. • It's a little thicker than average with generous bezels. Again, not a Con for me -- I am hard on electronics and girth reduces fragility -- but the look isn't sleek. • Walmart.com does not sell a case OR a screen protector for onn™ 8 Tablet Pro (it does sell a case for the 10"). This might not sound like a big deal but it is really annoying if you like to protect your electronics from the get-go. At least offer the screen protector! Note that cutout openings on cases made for previous onn™ 8" Tablets won't align properly with this model -- 100003561 -- so confirm the model number is compatible before you buy anything. But apart from having to hunt around for a case, I couldn't be more impressed with the Pro version of Walmart's tablet and hope they grow this promising house brand. Suggestion: Why not a Pro LTE version, seriously? Raise the price however much you need too, add native phone call capability, an extra gig of ram and never lose that headphone jack! (and don't forget to offer the optional case!)

Great Portable Device

ConsciousConsumer August 29, 2020

The Onn 8" Tablet Pro is an awesome portable device that's not too big or small. The tablet came charged and had a quick setup. There was not too much to do for setup before being able to use it. I like that I can synchronize data from my Android phone. This tablet makes the perfect e-reader and is also good for taking notes, shopping, Web surfing, and streaming content. The tablet works for videoconferencing, but the people on the screen appear very small. With streaming content and videoconferencing, I need to boost the volume sometimes with an external speaker. Overall, this mini tablet performs well and is a great companion to my Android phone, a great desktop device, and a great stand-alone device for Internet and app activities.

Nice Tablet

GeoCal May 18, 2020

I received the 8" onn. Tablet Pro through the Spark Reviewer Program. Unpackaged the Tablet and charged the battery, turned it on, and followed the prompts to get started and connected to the internet. This is a Walmart product and it comes preloaded with the Walmart Grocery, Walmart.com, and Sam's Club apps. It's powered by Android, so the navigation is straight forward and easy to use. All the apps are in alphabetical order and simple to find what you are looking for. 32 GB of storage is a fair amount and can be upgrades with a microSD chip. Screen is a full diagonal 8" and is very clear and responsive to touch. Overall, it's a nice tablet, lightweight and thin. On/off response is almost instant, so no waiting. Front and rear cameras take good photos. Nice Tablet.

Everything you need in a tablet

Jeremydude September 3, 2020

First off it comes with some great coupons including $10 worth of free walmart ebooks. With their selection this is a wonderful bonus. Also coupons for vudu and walmart pick up. Next it has a nice size but not overly huge display screen. Full HD and crystal clear. It feels substantial and sturdy in your hands. The back is slip proof which is nice so you don't drop it easily. It has a very good camera for pictures, videos and of course skype or facebook webcam chats. It runs video games very smoothly with that 2GB of ram and that beefy 2.0 GHz processor. I had no issue running Pubg mobile on it and that's impressive for a budget device like this! That octacore processor has some muscle to it! I would suggest for it's longevity buying a screen protector and case, spend a few extra dollars it's just common sense. Now it's easy to just jump right in, you swipe up for your apps. It runs Android 10 which gives you some great benefits. Bottom line, if you want a very solid meat and potatoes tablet for everyday use or just don't want to gamble Ipad money for a child-teen this would be a fantastic option. Or like me it simply does everything I need it to do. Emails, facebook, twitter, video chat, Youtube, Netflix and even most mobile games this will please you as it does me. Next I want to buy some attachable side controllers for the gaming because it plays them nicely.

Great Tablet!!

Kinzz37 September 7, 2020

I have been using this for more than week. I watch Netflix, internet surfing and take notes. I did not used this for camera. It does not have high quality camera. However, you can capture the front and rear camera with 5 megapixels. It does not has high brightness in the display. Overall, it has good built in quality. It also have expandable memory storage that can increase using the micro SD card. It has USB c cable for charging and aux port that can used to use wired headphone. Overall, it is good quality of tablet for regular use.

Great tablet for streaming and home schooling

ProreviewerNh September 3, 2020

I think Walmart's ONN brand is decent especially for the prices. That being said, I was expecting this tablet to be fairly slower than a top of the line tablet. After using it to surf the web and play videos online I was very impressed how fast it actually was. 32 gigs internal which is more than enough in my opinion especially when its expandable with an SD card. The only knocks to this tablet is that taking a picture is a lil choppy and any gaming apps that are more complex this tablet is not gonna do. All in all very pleased.

I didn't understand why anyone would want one...

IAmTheJudgeOfNoOne September 18, 2020

I didn't understand why anyone would want one until I got one myself. I figured they are just a giant phone without being able to make a phone call or texts, and if I wanted something big and bulky I would just get a laptop. I was pleasantly surprised once I got everything set up. I copied everything over from my phone and set up each "page" almost identical to my phone so I could easily go back and forth. My cell provider also has an app that allows me to send & receive texts over wifi as well. I only received this because I participate in the Spark Reviewer program but I am glad I got it. I actually use it everyday! I have a lot of "smart home" stuff and use this as the console. I was getting frustrated with trying to hold on to it because it is thin and slippery so I purchased a case with a built-in stand, and that was a game changer! I also have an adjustable holder that goes around my neck and this fits on it easily even with the case. The response is good, the connection to wifi is good, the screen resolution is decent enough. The picture quality is decent enough as well.

Great little tablet

Teachingmom September 9, 2020

This tablet was super easy to set up, the battery charges quickly, and it is not loaded up with lots of useless apps when it arrives. I use the tablet in the kitchen for recipes and it's been great to have bigger text than a phone provides. The battery charge lasts for 3-4 days with medium use. The display and sound both exceeded my expectations. The tablet is light and durable, the screen cleans well after my cooking hands have used it.

Nope.

Kelli February 28, 2021

So my Onn tablet worked fine up until today when the system did an update on the wireless connection then started turning on and off repeatedly. Once I finally got it to stop doing that all it would do is say that the tablet is corrupted and would no longer work. After several factory resets it still would not work. My tablet was only and I do mean only used as a TV. I only had Netflix, hulu, YouTube and primevideo on it. No other apps, no web browsing done. The system update is what broke it so beware! Do not waste your time with this tablet.
