I have tried all kinds of mane combs over a 50 year time period. The Oster Mane/Tail brush is the easiest for grip. It goes through long manes and tails in half the time and effort, I'm getting a second one for my husband!
My 5 yrs old Oster Mane and Tail brush held up so well and I guess someone at the barn felt they needed it as mine went missing. So I ordered a new one. What a nice surprise to see Oster had redesigned it so that the new one is even more comfortable. Good thing too, as with age, my arthritis has worsened. There isn't another mane brush I would use than Oster as it works so well on the mane and tail. I use it with Mane 'n Tail Spray once a week and do not have breakage of the hairs. My Tennessee Walker has a long mane, tail and forelock that is very healthy, I believe because the products I use do no harm.
I have always relied on a metal comb to get all the tangles out, working my way gently from the bottom of the tail or mane hair...plastic combs and brushes never seemed to get it done...my daughter always complained that I was damaging the hair! This brush gets it done thoroughly and gently and I think my 3 horses are relieved that I finally got the right thing!! PS No bristles have fallen out yet either...
My old gelding has become addicted to rubbing his rump on thistle bushes, coming in daily from the field with an entire tail dreadlocked with thistle seeds. His tail is half the thickness it used to be bc I was using an old bath brush and pulling out so much hair every time I cleaned him up. I ordered the Oster tail brush and was amazed at how much less it took out of his tail. (We also now wrap his tail, a fact he's not happy about!)
Let me say that nothing works on my horses extremely thick kinky tail without pulling out hairs. This is easy to hold, works through snags that traditional style brushes balk at, and doesn't damage the hair. Combined with a detangling product it works well and is easy to hold. I would buy it again.
This brush has really hard plastic prongs/bristles that are good for getting out dreadlocks or tangles from horses with super thick manes or tails. Unfortunately it does tend to pull out a lot more hair with it than a "ball tip" brush, so you have to be careful. Using a detangler on the tail first helps to reduce the amount of hair that gets pulled out. Still a fairly good product though.
Much better than other brushes and combs when it comes to really thick manes & tails. My haflinger has a long, thick double mane and thick tail, and this brush gets through his hair much more effectively than brushes I've had in the past. Sometimes I wish the bristles were slightly longer, but it's still superior to other options.
I liked this mane and tail brush at first but then the bristles started breaking and becoming sharp. It now does more harm than good and can scratch the skin. It now breaks the hair rather than detangle.
This brush is so HUGE! it rips out horses manes and tails even when not tangled, however my boyfriend ran this brush over with our big truck and it survived!
I find that this brush is an awkward shape, so when I used it for the mane and tail, I had to go over the same areas multiple times. It is not a very practical design. I have not used it for that long, so I can't say anything about durability. I feel that the price of this brush is way too much.
