High quality safer coffee maker.
I purchased this OXO Brew 8‑Cup Coffee Maker after seeing a review of coffee makers in the Washington Post which gave it high marks. Over all, I'm satisfied however it took a bit of experience with the device. First of all the device looks good. I purchased it due to the high marks from the Post and because I was looking for a smaller coffee maker of 8 cups or less. This coffee maker has flat bottom round basket type of filter rather than the cone type of my previous maker. It has a glass carafe and warmer with simple controls that has three modes: - mug mode with a stand and a smaller filter basket that uses small filters - 4 cup carafe mode - 8 cup carafe mode I use the 4 cup carafe mode which gives me two mugs of coffee. I use 4 level scoops, a metal whole bean scoop, along with two cups of water measured with a Pyrex glass measuring cup. I most often used Charleston Roasters Kiawah organic blend ground bagged coffee. I use Melitta 8-12 cup unbleached filters. This device does have a warmer pad to keep the carafe hot. I don't like the warmer as within a few minutes, the flavor of the coffee changes. So when I make a carafe, once the alert that it's finished goes off, I give it another minute then turn the device off. This procedure saves the flavor. I also found that the water level markings on the device reservoir are not accurate and using those markings to measure 4 cups of water resulted in weaker coffee. So I use a measuring cup now to measure out 2 cups of water which results in a water level a touch below the 4 cups mark of the reservoir. Using the 4 cup carafe mode, turning off the machine after the alert sounds and using level scoops of coffee with 2 cups of water measured with a measuring cup provides me with two servings of good coffee at the strength I like. I heat half and half in my mug before pouring in the coffee. I've also used my Panasonic microwave with a power level of 3 to warm my mug refill. Overall, I'm satisfied with the device. It seems to provide a more reliable and consistent cup of coffee when compared to my previous maker, probably because it seems to be easier to use.
This is a great coffee maker. The design is sleek and it heats water quickly. Only takes around 7 minutes to make the full 8 cups. It also includes a brew basket attachment if you want to make less coffee and it does a good job adjusting the water flow rate depending on the setting. Its heating plate keeps the coffee hot and automatically shuts off after 2 hours for the half carafe and 4 hours for the full carafe, and you can easily turn it on again. Overall I really like this machine however the glass carafe design is a minor annoyance. The plastic top of the carafe makes a narrow opening so it's hard to wash by hand and it also traps water so every time I flip it right side up after washing, water begins to dribble down the sides of it.
Disappointed . For 179$ this was not what I expected. The coffee did not taste as good as from my old Cuisinart coffee maker. It also did not stay hot for very long. Total let down.
I was really excited to get a beautiful new coffee maker, but was really disappointed by the coffee. My decrepit old Cuisinart made much better coffee. This one makes really weak coffee, the water doesn't stay on the grounds long enough to transfer flavor. I'm experimenting with keeping the pot off the unit for a bit, but I'm typically busy in the AM and don't want to stand around. Also, the carafe doesn't keep the coffee as hot as my old Cuisinart carafe. It is very attractive.
Didn't heat properly
