The material is thicker on the bottom and thinner on top for cool comfort. The support around the arches is nice and he said they were comfortable, even on his 12.5/13 size shoe feet. These socks fit well! I have slimmer feet and these seem to stay on my foot without falling down the back of my ankle. They are pretty comfortable in gym shoes. Although it has a tag that says cushioned sport, I'm not sure how they would perform while playing sports but they are lightweight.
