It's very unfortunate to see so many negative comments regarding this grass seed, we specialize in agronomics and soil biology and have been using this particular product for years with 100% success, you have to know what you're doing to plant a lawn and have no weeds
I'm in Queens NYC. We have killer unfiltered sun nowadays that scorches everything or downpours that turn your lawn into a virtual rice paddy plus I'm 500 feet from 8 lanes of constant traffic and in the flight path of 2 airports - pollution galore! Tried Scotts - it fried my lawn and left big bleached holes. Tried a couple so called organic brands, got weeds or nothing. Pennington grew EVERY TIME. BUT...you MUST cover the seed with a little topsoil particularly in bad patches. You must reapply at least twice in the spring. These seeds are great but they need a little protection. So either cover with soil or a lawn blanket stapled to the ground, water regularly and WAIT. It takes about 3-4 weeks to get baby grass and another 4 weeks or so to get to a regular height. The result is GORGEOUS. Patience and some TLC pays off! Thanks Pennington!
This product has worked far better than I anticipated. The bare spots in my lawn have filled in completely in less than 4 weeks. I watered twice daily for 5-10 minutes and waited to spread the seed until temperatures dropped to the 70-85 range in the fall.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I tried this grass seed for a Influenster campaign. I was unable to post in the campaign so I thought I would review it here. The grass seed works quickly especially in shady areas and I would recommend it to anyone who has trouble growing grass in areas that have low sun.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After an intense heat wave with no rain for over two weeks, my yard was looking pretty abysmal. I purchased seeds sprouted within just a few days and now most of the yellow is gone! It's a great value for an affordable price and I would definitely buy it again if needed.
Bought this 20 lb bag of seed and followed the instructions on putting it on my lawn. But after about 14 days I noticed more clover growing than grass. With the rain we have had in the past few days, the clover is out pacing the grass. Now I have a yard with half clover and half grass. I doubt if I'll buy this brand again
I tried twice to get a small area to grow. I watered and didnt mow that area but still no success to speak of. Should not have believed the ad. Very disappointed.
Planted in an area previously covered with mulch....removed all mulch....worked in new soil: turf builder law soil....smoothed, spread seed, watered with hose....added bonus a couple of days of spring rain did the watering for me. Resumed hose watering....Seed still there and not a single blade of grass in sight after 2 weeks, maybe a bum bag?
Bought a big bag of the KY 31 at the local Rural King. Overseeded my 2000 sq ft aerated lawn in the spring of 2022. Watered exactly as recommended. No growth at all. No germination to speak of. Did the same thing at the optimal time this past fall. This time my neighbor and I seeded our yards at the same time. Same terrible results for Pennington and me while my neighbor used a cheaper brand and had very good results. I wish I could get a refund now. Cannot recommend Pennington.
I bought two 20# bags of their "Sun & Shade" Grass Seed. That should be "Penningtons' Weed Seed" at best . . . After months of research locally and with Pennington I purchased their "Sun & Shade Smart Seed". Scraped, Scarified and spread 3-4" of "organic matter" then rototilled it in and planted. 3 years later, I have a front yard that is a wasteland with an over abundance of weeds that I have never had. Including a species that our County Extension Agent says is not indigenous to our area. A patch that didn't get planted is looking very nice with the 60 year old original grass. The Back Yard the was prepped, but not planted the old grass came back, with less weeds, better than the newly planted Pennington seed. It does not work. Although their Website, Old & "New" Packaging (new packaging means an attempt at an image update), Lot Label, Ads . . . profess a gorgeous lush lawn, the CRSs & Seed Guys say completely another . . . now. I was treated like I was nutz expecting a nice somewhat established lawn in 3 years. They were not willing to acknowledge nor stand behind the guarantee that's printed right on the bag. Right now the Pennington planted areas are almost bare except for patches of weeds. A few are more like continents of weeds. Strange though all the negative reviews, which there are many, are all basically the same AND just like mine. Now that I have reseed my lawn allover again, I found a seed company just south of me that has what Pennington promised at half the price. When I called to get more information, the guy I talked to just laughed when I mentioned Pennington. He said, "Sorry you had to go through that, but we'll take care of you and guarantee our product." Always Buy Local.
