I tried other stuff to make rock walls for my model railroad. Everything broke trying to get the rocks out of the molds. This stuff comes out of the molds cleanly and without splitting or breaking. Now I have some decent rocks for my HO train layout.
Had to return as it was not specifically what I was looking for. This was all on me not fully understanding what this casting material was best for. I've seen it used with great effect for creating casts of inanimate objects, but I again, not what I was looking to do.
This compound needs a FULL HOUR minimum to set before removing the casting from the mold. Even longer for thicker castings. If casting is removed too early it breaks and crumbles very easily! This compound also dries a light gray and not bright white. Your casting will need to sit out to dry 24 hours before painting. If you are painting with an acrylic metallic or pearl color of paint, you need to PRIME your casting first because the shine and pearlescent appearance of your paint will be absorbed into the casting leaving a dull look instead of metallic or pearl! You will also need to press the compound, in its liquid state, using a popsicle stick or the handle end of a small paint brush into the detail crevases of the mold. Be sure to do this before the liquidy stage of the compound starts to solidify! Happy casting and waiting. . . . it's going to take a while! 🙂
This mixed up easily and did not set too quickly (as another type had). It allowed me time to get a 2 year old to make a hand print into it. After 24 hours I painted it and the paint took well to it.
