PetSafe Electronic Pet Door, Large

This is an excellent product. Beware though. You want to use this door in the automatic setting. It has an “unlocked” setting that is convenient to use once in awhile. Do not use this setting for extended periods of time if you have dogs that, like me, love to bolt out the door when company shows up you may want to consider leaving the door in the automatic setting. In my case my 4 dogs love to “come a runnin” when someone comes down the driveway and when the door is in the unlocked position there is nothing to slow them down the door hinges are just not designed to take the “hit” and they end up breaking in the corners which in turn cause the automatic function not to work since the door can then no longer rise and lower correctly. At least in the automatic position the dogs have to stop and wait for the door to “pop” open before they go running outside thus slowing them down and minimizing the impact on the door hinges. We have had to replace the door once due to this hard lesson. Other than that excellent product. Oh and always keep a spare set of D batteries.

I just installed this door in a second home. Works great and fairly simple install at both homes. I installed in the wall with the optional wall extension. Works great for my American Bulldog, especially on long work days when I am away from home.

Overall I like the door and the concept, dogs are still adjusting to the heavy weight plastic versus the vinyl type doors they had in the past. The loud “click” noise really gets my girl scared so mostly using it as unlocked during day and locked during night instead of the fobs right now. Hoping we get her accustomed to the sound to use it as intended - need to keep local wildlife out!

My dog broke the older door I had, and fortunately PetSafe still had the same door available so it fit the hole in the door. I like the pet door. The 4 stars is because I wish the hinge mechanism could be stronger so it would be less likely to break.

I never installed it or actually used it because the pass key that would have hung off the cat's collar was huge. I thought it inappropriate for my small 9 lb cat. So I returned it in favor of one that will work with an implanted microchip via RFI.

The plastic hinges are not going to last long I'm afraid. The problem I am experiencing is the use of the fobs. The door operates with the fobs fine but with two dogs it's only a matter of time before there will be a problem. One dog activates it and it opens. They both go out. It starts to close while the second dog goes out at the same time. The time it starts to shut is too soon after it opens. Door still swinging and it shuts. I'm afraid it's going to bend the metal piece that holds the plastic hinges or break the plastic hinges. I can't stand by that door all the time. Two dogs. It's an issue.

The clear door that swings back and forth is made of plastic. The teeth that holds the door when it swing back and forth when the dog goes in and out broke half of them already in just a little over a month from the time it was installed. I wonder if Walmart will still accept if I return it. I've $149 plus tax for this. That's a lot of money for me.

I have had this since 2017 and my only complaint until recently was how fast the batteries drained. About once a month to be specific. Over the last couple years I have had to “fight” with the door to get it to fully lock. I make sure I clean the opening so no debris is there. Occasionally it will close right away. But more often the result is that I have to sit in front of it and cycle to the lock setting multiple times. Last night it too me multiple attempts trying to get it to lock. As of a month ago, the motor does not sound good either. I am looking to replace this and I will never recommend an electronic door. Too many pieces to break. Sometimes old school is best.

Originally I had the all weather petsafe door. When our cat learned how to use the doggie door, I replaced it with this electronic one. Big mistake. Within a week the cat learned to just follow the dog out. Once he was a little slow and the door ended up locking shut on his tail. That was a nightmare trying to get it to unlock with it shut on his tail. After only about 4 mo of use, the flap came off. Was a pain to put it back on. Now after only 10 mo the cheap hinge has broken completely. Now I'm finding out there is no replacement and I would have to buy a whole new door. Wish I could find a replacement door that would fit the bigger hole we had to make to fit this one. Only other option would be to buy a new door. Both options are expensive. Very mad that my only reason to buy this door was to keep our cat from going out and that plan backfired. This door is also very noisy. I also had to spray paint the clear flap black to block out all the light it lets in. It is also very drafty.

We have had two of these pet doors and about to need a replacement because it is broken beyond repair. Aside from that this door is a cool concept, but the sensors are hard to keep up with as they screw off and get lost. Keeping up with batteries is super expensive. The door takes two D batteries and they last less than a month. We don't even use the system as it's designed. If your dog is one that goes hard through a door, this is not the door for you. One of our dog tears through when coming inside which has caused the plastic on the door and the insert to break. If the door does not lock them there are gaps in all sides. This is insanely draining on utility bills, especially in extreme heat or cold. I would not recommend this door to anyone really.
