I applied solid stain "potato skin" to porch 10 x 30, all railing, steps, ramp decks and garden raised bed gardens. This was this past summer and now after all the snow it looks like the day I finished it. Great stuff. Maybe the folks who had problems should have started with a clean dry surface.
In the process of staining my log cabin home. The wood was sun damaged and the solid seems to be doing a great service for restoring and protecting from any further damage. Does feel like more of a paint Bohan a stain so do test areas first before committing.
I applied Valspar Solid stain (Simply Cedar Tint) to my redwood deck which had weathered due to fading of the oil based semi-transparent stain applied previously. I sanded to bare wood to remove any residual stain. Application was easy and covered well. After one-year the finish looks as it did when applied. Great product so far with excellent water repellent attributes.
Love the product and how it covers, but don't expect the color to match the swatch. For the house, we had to have them custom tint it to get closer to the swatch. Now we have a custom color we'll have to match in the future. For our deck, 2 different tries with 2 different colors and still no good, so we'll be returning the product...which is difficult considering the COVID-19 shelter-in-place and store limits currently in effect (wish we could order colored paint online and do curbside pickup).
prior to using this product on 10,000 sq ft of barn siding we contacted technical support to ensure that there would be no issues using solid stain on kiln dried yellow pine. Assurance was given that the only issue have been with Redwood and cedar. We proceeded with staining siding prior to installing, it looked amazing until exposed to the sun, now I have knots showing all over the barn.
I purchased a home last spring with a relatively new (1 year old) 450 sq ft deck that the previous homeowners built. Knowing the importance of proper surface prep, I took all necessary precautions to ensure that the deck was ready, clean of dirt/mildew before staining, even spending the extra money to purchase Valspar deck cleaner/wood prep. The picture shows the surface of the deck damp to show the peeling more clearly. I applied the stain last summer and it looked great. I first noticed localized peeling between snowfalls in the winter, hoping it was just a certain spot. Now the peeling covers all the horizontal surfaces of the deck. This stain did not behave like a stain, but rather just regular paint. The stain did not penetrate the wood which is obvious from the peeling that is taking place. I'm very disappointed that the stain didn't even make it through one winter. I spent a lot of effort, time and money to make my home look good. Now I will have to invest more time and money to fix it.
Just bought this product two weeks ago for my deck. The solid coverage is great however the color is horrible. Not even close to what the sample shows. Too much hard work put into staining and also due to the Covid-19 restrictions returning this for another color and re doing it would have taken more time than its worth. I can deal with the color even as awful as it is. The worst is that the deck was cleaned and prepped correctly and the stain applied per directions. Within ONE week it is already chipping. So disappointed will never buy or recommend this product.
Preped my platform deck by powerwashing last week. Purchased 2 gallons of Solid color stain (Simply Cedar) yesterday and applied. Temp in the 70s and wood was dry. In 4 hours it was dry to touch and even walk on. Looked great! Early this AM it rained and sections of the deck have the stain bubbling up ready to peal.
I bought this last year 2021 but the weather turned cold and snowy. So I waited will this spring to spray it on my deck when it was pressure washed and dry for 2 weeks 2022. Now the stain is coming up on my deck in places. So much for a 10 year warranty
I bought 3 gallons of Valspar solid stain in light gray last summer, 2021. It went on great and looked nice for the summer. I had prepped my 3 year old deck according to instructions and was happy with the results. BUT after only one winter in NYS my deck is a peeling mess! All that time and money wasted and now I have to figure out how to redo this mess which will cost me more time and money. Valspar is junk and I will never buy it again. Too bad I couldn't give it 0 stars.
