These boxes are great but they are misunderstood and really misrepresented in their packaging and marketing. NO, THEY DO NOT AMPLIFY SIGNAL! If they didn't do what they actually do so well I would give the finger to the dummies who write the description and marketing. Just be honest about what this is. It's a cheap attenuator. It gives two selectable levels of RF gain reduction to cheaper radios that don't have any adjustable gain of their own. This box does nothing for you if your radio already has adjustable gain. This box can help with certain types of static and noise but not all of them. And it doesn't really exactly do what the packaging says it does. All that adds up to a lot of hit and miss reviews. If you understand what it is, what it isn't, and use it for the right situation it is AWESOME. So this box will cut your receive signal, by either 10 or 40 db roughly (manufacture's claimed amounts, I did not measure). Why would you want to do this? If you are in an area where you want to use CB radio in a traditional short-range sense of a few miles or less, and you get a lot of static and interference from the environment around you and further out (skip) that buries the audio of the people you are talking with then turning down your RF gain allows less of the extra static/garbage signals into your receiver, and it might quiet down the person you are talking with slightly too but you can compensate for that using more volume. It doesn't work out in all circumstances, but it DOES work for me in both of my cars in the sense that it chops a good bit of the extra noise off the signal but I still receive the people around me that I am trying to talk to clearly. In my case this actually did extend my usable receive range by a little bit. I am about 6 miles from town and the closer I get to town the more stray garbage RF my receiver starts to pick up from the town. This box helps me cut down that interference and my base station at home still sends a clear and strong enough signal to be heard and understood further into town without going crazy from the static. Using something like this changes they way you might use squelch. Case by case, you may end up not really using squelch at all like me. This and some other basic static reduction techniques got my radio quiet enough that I can just leave it on with the squelch off and there is not enough static or hiss to bother me. YMMV. They do charge a little too much on the regular retail price for this, its a very sloppy "circuit" inside that cost them $3 in materials tops but whatever, if you only need one or two to help cut down the extra noise on a cheaper radio or two without built-in adjustable RF gain then these can help. Almost every car radio antenna combination is unique, and your area and what sources of interference are around you matter too. This works great with my President Electronics "Bill FCC" radio.
This thing works really good! I have anywhere from 3 to 7 S units of hiss noise normally. With it switched on low, my noise level drops to ZERO! I can still hear some noise but what a dramatic difference it makes! I don't advise using the high mode because it clips the voice level too much. I tested the transmit with a reliable operator and NO difference! Doesn't cut my outgoing signal level. Only two complaints; One: they should have enclosed it in metal, not plastic, Two: one of the SO239s was loose! I had to take the cover off and tighten it up.
Forget about the haters!! This item works as it should. It's an item that is worth having as part of your cb rig.
Easy to mount and really helps eliminate engine noise
