These are really easy to use and are a great demo of supertasters in class - the supertasters usually jump and grab the paper out of their mouths, so they are easy to spot. I do bring a bag of candy - for all students, but in particular for the supertasters to be able to get rid of the bitter taste.
I used this product in conjunction with a genetic test for PTC taster gene. Pretty exciting for the kids. Even without this fancy test, it was useful to discuss genetics in a meaningful way.
These test papers are great for phenotype confirmation of PTC taster/non-taster trait.
This tool never fails to entertain and teach adults about genetic SNPs. It personalizes a difficult concept for some adult healthcare providers. Thanks for this simple, easy to use tool that assists me in teaching others about personalized medicine concepts in oncology.
this was a great part of lessons, for all ages. It was amazing to see how each child reacted to the taste of these papers. Even though we are all alike, there is so much about us that is different. Even the younger kids were able to learn this.
I utilized the PTC test strips as a wrap-up to the genetics, heredity, probability section of my 7th grade science class. They worked quite hard through the concepts, to where it was a perfect time to do a "Tree of Genetics" activity (google search it and hopefully you'll find it). Very simple to do, easy to carry out, and most importantly...easy to understand. The kids enjoyed it (though not the taste...hahaha). Pretty simple to find this via an online search of PTC paper and what it is, how it's used, etc. Good product, fairly inexpensive (which is GREAT for schools on tight budgets), and simple to use.
We have used the other style of PTC paper (the one that comes in small tubes) and found these packs from Carolina to be much better. Students definitely knew if they could taste this paper (and it helps to have control strips, too).
I cut the strips into 3 too for the little mouths. This works for a lot of ages and is a good lesson about how we perceive the world differently thanks to our genes.
The product is an easy method of allowing students to experience the genetic component of taste.
Carolina used to make reliably strong PTC papers, which was why I went back to them compared to another company I tried. But now they are either expired, poorly coated, or inconsistently coated. Some of them have no flavor at all (embarrassing while conducting an activity) while some of them are mildly-flavored (varies from package to package). So far, 1 package out of 6 was strong enough to trigger my super taster taste with one piece of paper (still not as strong as packages I have from 3+ years ago). 3 of them never worked, even with a handful of paper strips in my mouth at once. 2 of them were mild enough that I knew there was something on them when I put several strips in my mouth, but if someone tastes that for the first time in their life, they might not realize that they're tasting a stimulus triggered by this piece of paper (it's kind of like a "am I tasting something or not?"). These 6 packages that I'm talking about came over two shipments. The first 3 that I bought were lacking in signal entirely. When I told Carolina, they tried sending me a second shipment. So, they tried to fix the problem, but apparently they do not know how bad of a problem they have on their hands. I recommend going with another supplier.
