I will go out of my way, in the rain, with a broken-down truck, wearing flipflops and my PJ's to purchase the Purina Layena Crumbles for my chickens. I started on big box store chick crumbles and switched to Purina once they started laying. One day on the way home I get a call that we are out of chicken food. There was a terrible rain storm going on and I decided it was easier to stop and get a couple of bags of the box store brand than stopping at my local feed store to get the Layena; no big deal right? Grab some 'layer' food and hit the door. Within the first 2 weeks, I gave away the box store brand food and went and got my Purina crumbles...and learnt my lesson. The shells were the first thing we noticed, just collecting them we had more breaks than we had ever had for the entire first year when they were on a strictly Purina diet. Picking them up you could easily push your thumb through the soft shells; something that never happened to us before. The yokes, although darker and richer than store bought, was something we didn't notice until after we switched back to the Purina...they were nowhere near the quality of the Purina yokes. We laughed at ourselves for being such tools, and my laziness to get substandard food. The Purina Crumbles is our goto...from here on out! For the people who will argue that it may cost a little more than some of the other foods - I can only say this, sell a carton of eggs and offset the cost - it's worth the money, it's that easy.
My Silkies are picky about eating pellets and sometimes crumbles can be off their favorite list due to size or texture. So far they love it and their eggs are stronger.
I switched from a Organic feed to purina layena. no problems no extra this or that, the hens look awesome, the eggs are hard yolks are a beautiful sunset color!
I was feeding pellets from another manufacturer and the birds just didn't seem to get excited. I switched to Layena and WOW, what a difference! They get excited when I feed them, they lay eggs with hard shells and bright orange yolks. The feed smells good, which I think is why they "flock" to it. Really impressed with this feed and have continued using it.
We've been using Layena Crumbles for several years and our hens have stayed in good health. The amount of food that is ground into powder within the bag is a bit disappointing. To separate the crumbles from the powder waste, I have to sift it before filling the feeders. I've tried the pellets to avoid this problem but the chickens seem to prefer the crumbles.
small for price but the girls like it
I have been using the 25 pound bags of Layena layer crumbles for the last 6 months. In the last month I have had more dust and less crumble in every bag. The latest bag I opened also had corn mixed in with the dust, since when did corn get added to the crumbles? Looks like someone swept the floor and bagged it for food. I'm very disappointed, not sure how nutritious the dust is for them or if they are even eating the dust.
I been using this product for years and had good egg laying chickens. Then all of sudden they quit laying for about month, don't know what happened but I made my own feed and they started laying the very next day.
I bought a 50 pound bag at local Co-op after trying a 10 pound bag for my pigeons. I mix pellets with other feed. When I opened the sealed bag there were lots of rat dropping in the feed. Not what I expected from Purina. I don't use much daily maybe 5-6 ounces so I picked the droppings out. Don't know if I will buy this again.
The Purina Layena crumbles are nothing but powder. They must have changed the way they make them/process them. They are no longer crumbles. I have to keep throwing it away because the chickens don't want to eat powder.
