Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool - Music & Performance - CD

It's Radiohead, which means you're either going to feel like your soul just got rearranged in a cathedral made of static and reverb… or you're going to wonder why everything sounds like ghosts sighing through a broken church organ. This album isn't a party playlist. It's not background music for washing dishes. It's the kind of thing you put on when you've already stared out the window for too long and need Thom Yorke to validate your vague sense of doom. The strings (thanks to Jonny Greenwood flexing his film composer muscles) wrap everything in this lush, cinematic sadness. Songs like “Burn the Witch” are paranoid but precise, while “Daydreaming” is basically six minutes of drowning gracefully in molasses. Lyrically, it's Radiohead's usual cocktail of unease, heartbreak, and end-times anxiety, but this time they've ditched the spikier electronics in favor of orchestral swells and acoustic textures. The result is less “glitchy alien panic” and more “the apocalypse is a black-and-white art film scored by violins.” The album closer, “True Love Waits,” is maybe the cruelest joke of all: a fan favorite finally released, stripped to its barest bones, sounding like it's been left out in the rain for years. It's gorgeous. It's miserable. It's perfect. So, review verdict: A Moon Shaped Pool is a masterwork if you're willing to sit in the sadness and let it swallow you whole. If you're not in the mood for existential wallpaper that makes you feel like you've been wandering an abandoned cathedral, maybe just stick to pop radio and leave this one to the melancholics.
