I have an Appendix mare with shoulder confirmation that creates rubs with stock horse blankets. This sheet has solved the issue. The only thing i don't care for is the tail strap. I prefer the leg straps. The tail one has gotten pretty filthy in a short time.
I was determined to find a waterproof rain sheet /blanket after trying several that disappointed. This one is wonderful! My horse was completely dry after hours of soaking rain. The fit on my Morgan is perfect with no rubbing. Was concerned that there are no leg straps, but the tail cords work great with no slipping of the blanket despite lots of rolling. The blanket was expensive, but worth every cent knowing Cosmo is warm, dry and comfortable.
I find that for mine and many other horses, the V-front closure really makes a difference (as long as the blanket is the right size) in reducing pressure and rubbing across the point of shoulder. Plus all the other great features and quality from Horseware/Rambo makes their blankets worth the extra money, but mainly for me, it's how comfortably they fit my horses around shoulders and withers. The poor fits I see for withers and shoulders with so many blankets, for so many horses, make me cringe! Also, I love the high neck/wug style, but for my Morgan mare, with her big, upright Morgan neck, it just didn't seem the right match, so this style is working better for her.
I needed a new rain sheet and am so happy I went with the Rambo. Durable, fits him well (OTTB), and with these crazy fall temp fluctuations I don't have to worry if it gets a little warm because it's breathable - he was still dry underneath. Pricey, but I consider it an investment just like the Rambo medium I bought for him last year.
After trying three different turnout sheets priced from $ 60 to $150 for my new horse -- a small Holsteiner mare, I decided to take the plunge and go with the Rambo (which came highly recommended after doing some research and asking on COTH). I was unhappy with the fit of all of first three, especially sliding back when she lowers her head to eat and subsequently pressing on the withers. The Rambo seems to stay loose around her body. It's only been a few days, so no report yet on rubs, but so far I'm very hopeful. The only two minor critiques are that 1) the belly surcingles came detached and needed to be assembled (it was easy, but a 7 step process according to the booklet, and a somewhat annoying one -- I don't see why they couldn't have attached them), and 2) even at their shortest, the surcingles where still too long on my horse (I don't think she's particularly short -- she wears a 78 at 15.3), making them hang dangerously low, so I had to put a knot in each one of them and try to lay the knots as flat as possible. That took care of the issue. Overall both my mare and I are very happy, this is a high quality sheet which is perfect for temps in the 40s and 50s, typical for Northern California rainy winters.
Ordered the new Smartpak Turnout with the 10 yr. guarantee, but after less than 5 wears I had to return it. Should have known to stick with a Rambo. Yes, they are expensive, but they are the best I have ever found. You get what you pay for, and with how hard horses are on their clothes, if you can swing it, you won't want to buy anything else. Highly Recommend!
My TB gelding recently destroyed his medium weight turnout, so I started to research his replacement. I saw nothing but rave reviews for the original Rambo in terms of durability, and also read about great fit for horses with high withers. So far, the blanket is holding up well to all the hype - no blanket rubs and no damage, hooray! Very happy with this blanket...you really do get what you pay for in the horse world!
I bought this blanket for my 16+ hand Arab cross. He is a very difficult fit but this blanket fits him very, very well. My mom also bought one for a 16+ hand quarter horse. It fits him perfectly. Great quality blanket!
I have always been a huge Rambo fan and I have many Rambo blankets. This year I needed a new heavyweight blanket because of the colder than normal weather. The newly designed Rambo original fits better than ever with its new front closures however they have used plastic fasteners for the "removable surcingles" and for the new tail strap. The first few days, the plastic fastners broke and I had surcingles dangling. A few days later the tail strap plastic ends broke. Rambo sends you 3 spare plastic attachments and I have only 1 left. Obviously they know this could be a problem. When a 1200 lb animal rolls with their blanket onto this cheap plastic, of course it is going to break! I have informed the SmartPak people about this and they are trying to help me. We'll see. I don't want to return the blanket, I just needs tons of spare plastic parts inlcuding a new tail strap from Horsewear. If this new Rambo was a car it would be recalled. I'm sure they will come out with metal hardwear to replace this plastic eventually. This is the first time Rambo has ever disappointed me.
Purchased new rambo turnout for winter season, only 6 weeks on my horse and it's already trashed! The plastic clip on tail strap broke the first week. Now the inside lining is hanging out and the white padding is strewn over the dry lot. I've been using rambo turnouts for over 20 years and still have one I purchased 12 years ago. The older models are truly worth the money. The blanket I purchased in 2013 is laying in my hayloft with same rips, just thought it was a fluke defective blanket….now I see this is a pattern with rambo quality and craftsmanship, so sad. The off brand blanket I purchased at a local tack store is still holding strong. The clerk at my tack shop reports she gets many poor reviews on rambos. Anyone else seeing these problems? Hopefully Smarkpack Equine will make this right…..
