Fantastic Fly Mask

SmartPaker Danielle October 9, 2025

What can I say—I LOVE these fly masks so much! A friend of mine purchased one for her horse years ago. When I saw it, I knew I had to get a couple for my ponies! My gelding is a fly mask Houdini. Last summer, he went through a grand total of 7 masks. They were torn, shredded, lost, you name it—he did it. When I converted him to the Rambo Plus Fly Masks, it was like magic! While the nose pieces do seem to come off the masks fairly easily (for him), the rest of the mask stays put so well. The unique design keeps the mask up and off sensitive eyes and it has a great UV rating (65%). And now, my mare has to match: she's lives up to her princess status in her lavendar mask.

Nice mask. One big problem.

Marier1 May 16, 2016

I bought this mask because I was tired of all the other masks that would, with time, end up rubbing on my horses eyes. I loved that this one had a band that would keep it away from his eyes. The problem is the placement of that band. On my horse, it goes right across his field of vision. He couldn't see well because of that band, and he was very spooky with it on.

Disappointed

Finn77 July 16, 2021

I'm not sure when it happened, but the quality in these masks dropped terribly. I use this style for my blind horse to protect her eyes. I used to use 1 mask a year, now I'm going through them ever other month. This last mask I ordered fell apart after 1 month. Unbelievable! For the price, they are so cheap. For years I've found this style for helpful. What a disappointment.

Exceptional staying power with field halter

Amanda August 30, 2020

Bought this to try to keep the irritation fly masks can cause eyes to a minimum. I know I play a lot of hide and go find my fly mask with my horse so I paired this with a field halter and hoped. It's done so well! I'm very pleased. He has absolutely tried to get it off but he has failed. Bonus points because he hasn't been able to rip it (yet) and it's still completely intact. The horse however, is not amused

Nice for the eyes

Cinco June 21, 2019

The nose extension was too long and my horse has a normal to long face. I customized the nose portion to my horse using regular scissors and sewing machine and I made a fringe out of the mesh and put in contours to provide maximal coverage but improve aeration at the nostrils. I also had to move the velcro keepers over to give more room for my horses head. Once I made those adjustments, which were easy to do, the fit and function have been great Oh, I do suggest one other thing: I think there should be an opening for the forelocks to be pulled through and allowed to be outside of the mask I have not configured that yet myself but I am thinking about it. Sorry I did not think of getting a photo but I think my nose extension adaptations turned out pretty cool, if I may say so myself.

Peace of mind!

I waited a long time to buy this fly mask. Partially because of the price, but also partially because I was not sure if I was a fan of the possible obstruction of vision thanks to the band that goes across the front to keep the mask away from their eyes. I have always been paranoid about masks coming in contact with my horse's eyes and causing more harm than good. Once I saw tried the mask on and saw how it sits away from his eyes I was hooked! It has great eye clearance and so far he has not had any rubs wearing it 24/7. He is notorious for getting masks off, and this one generally stays on. With a grazing muzzle overtop it has not came off once. I was a little worried about halters/muzzles fitting overtop of it but we have not had issues. Sizing wise, he is a 15.2 quarter horse who is sometimes in cob sized items and sometimes horse sized. His cashel fly mask was the arab/small horse size and fit well. I ended up getting him the large pony size in this mask and it is perfect. The ears are huge as others have said, but he doesn't seem to mind. He has not seemed to have issues maneuvering his field in the mask, so I assume that means he can still see fine even with the band around it. He is happy and that is what matters!

A Great Fly Mask

FL Rider April 20, 2015

This is a great fly mask. Yes, it does look a bit out of the ordinary and is more expensive than most, but the style does a fabulous job of keeping the fly mask away from the horses' eyes. I'm in Florida, and it seems that the extra space keeps the horses a little cooler. The material is loosely weaved but tough. Because of the band that keeps it away from the horses' eyes, you can't crunch up the fly mask. It holds up just fine to hang on a fence and hit with a hose. When not in use, you can lay it flat in sort of a semi-circle, but it is a little bulkier than most. Well worth the bulkiness! If you don't have netting on your trailer windows, this fly mask would be wonderful for traveling because the wind won't push the fly mask against the horses' eyes and face. I selected the oatmeal color because I just don't like white fly masks. I always put fly masks over my eyes in order to judge visibility and clarity, and I liked that I could see quite well through it. Do keep in mind that it runs very large. My horses are all about 16 hand Thoroughbreds, and the horse size was much too large for what I consider to be their big heads. The cob size fit them well. My horses didn't like the extra nose piece, and it's easy enough to remove it from the Velcro attachment. For light-skinned horse noses, this would be an added bonus.

Great Eye Protection

Lauren April 30, 2020

I bought one of these masks last year for my older gelding who suddenly went blind in one eye and has had a very hard time adjusting. The eye gaurds keep him from bumping into things and it has enough UV protection for him outside in the summer. Very durable, he lives outside 24/7 and always has his mask on- a whole year on him everyday and its only just starting to get some wear.

Durable! Season 3 starts with the same flymasks!

Kearsarge Meadows April 29, 2015

Two years ago yesterday, I purchased my first Rambo Plus Flymask from SmartPak.  It was a brand new product at the time.  Today, the little black flies are back in New Hampshire, so we put flymasks on the horses... The SAME flymasks I purchased 2 years ago. Our horses love the Rambo Plus Flymasks.  They don't try to take them off.  There's no reason to.  The masks do not touch the eyes and are apparently comfortable for the horses. Yup, they seem pricey.  But not if you only have to purchase one! Over time, these are VERY economical. The only challenge is in finding the PERFECT fit.  Only my biggest Dutch Warmblood wears "Horse" size.  "Cob" fits the most.   And "Pony" fits the 14 hh Quarter Horse quite well.  I'm glad SmartPak is happy to refund poor fits.

Love this mask!

JonesShopper May 25, 2014

Best fly mask I've ever used on my horse. They do run large though. I have a small thoroughbred and found even the cob was a bit too big and went with the pony size. He used to end up losing all his other masks but this one stays on very well. My horse does roll a lot and scratch his face and lose the other ones but Rambo Plus stays on very well. I love that the mask keeps it's shape and off his eyes! The mask is going into it's second season and still looks great.
