I bought this cheese to make potatoes dauphinoise, which is French for "potatoes that have transcended their humble origins and now wear a tiny beret." The Red Apple Gruyere melts into those thinly sliced layers like it was born for the job, creating the kind of creamy, golden situation that makes you question every life decision that didn't involve more gratin dishes. The melt on this cheese is genuinely unsettling in how good it is. It doesn't fight you. It doesn't clump up and stage a protest. It just surrenders into a smooth, velvety pool of cooperation. I've used it on everything from French onion soup to a casual Tuesday night "I wonder what this tastes like melted on sourdough" experiment (results: fantastic, life-altering, possibly illegal in some counties). There's a subtle sweetness here that sets it apart from the more aggressive, cave-aged Gruyeres that want you to know they spent six months in the dark contemplating their own complexity. This one is approachable. Friendly, even. Toss some shaved curls onto salads and suddenly you're the person at the potluck who "really knows food," which is a reputation you can ride for years on minimal effort. The 7 oz square format is the right amount for one recipe plus enough left over to eat standing in front of the open refrigerator at 11 PM, which is the most honest way to evaluate any cheese. Wisconsin continues its quiet campaign to be taken seriously as a cheese state, and this Gruyere is a strong argument in its favor. Five stars. My dauphinoise has never been more dauphin.
I am trying new cheese types for meals and recipes. I chose this one because of the mild taste and creamy, stringy texture. It is very good for grilled cheese and melts very smooth. I shredded it on my broccoli and loved it. I will purchase again.
Most people think Gruyere is only good for Fondue, which it's wonderful for that. But in a quiche it is also wonderful. It shredded well it's not a hard cheese, shreds and feels like regular cheddar. I also purchased a store brand Gruyere and truly cannot tell the difference.
This brand is such good quality. Not a bunch of additives like cheaper cheese. Melts good on burgers too. Just don't get a very big chunk which is a little disappointing.
limited selection of qruyere at WM. love this as snack plain or w/ fruit %26/or nuts. excellent change to usual market cheeses. don't use it for cooking or melting so can't comment on that.
Pretty good cheese, not as good as cheddar or swiss but I eat it because it is one of the HEALTHIEST cheeses you can eat. Suppose to be great for blood circulation / arteries. gut biome.
I wanted a real gruyere cheese, which is a hard dry cheese and extremely tasty. Red Apple Grurye is NOT a gruyere cheese... it was soft, rubbery and bland. I'm shocked at the Red Apple Grurye positive reviews but I think it is serious false advertising. Walmart does sell a real gruyere cheese from Switzerland and that one is just fine! I hope Walmart cares or scans reviews for this type of customer experience about this and will look into it for its customers that want a real gruyere.
Five years ago, this cheese was absolutely amazing. The cheese, the brand the texture. The taste was amazing. Ordered it today because I'm gonna be going on a four or five day trip and want cheese and meat only to eat. I cut it up before leaving for the trip to make sure that there were serving sizes available. It literally taste like waxy flavored yuck. I will not order this again. They're charging maximum price for minimal quality.
The cheese that I paid to have delivered, is 30 days past it's expiration date ! Walmart refuses to refund my money unless I return it to the store, I'm not your garbage can Perry, Florida Walmart !
This was not Gruyère. Not even a very bad or low quality Gruyère. It tasted like a low grade, bland, barely aged, slightly sour cheese, such as bulk mild cheddar or jack. Mislabeled.
