This is nice and sturdy, installation - very easy for a DIY-er on my 2002 Odyssey. I had to use a 12mm x1.25 tap to clean the holes out, since they had years of crud and corrosion. That actually took about an hour, mainly because it's hard to get room to turn the tap handle. Once the holes were cleaned out, it only took about 15 - 30 min. to bolt the receiver on. If you buy a wiring harness adapter made for the Ody. it would probably take about 5-10 minutes to plug it into the existing harness (plug is already there behind the left rear trim.) In my case, I used an existing harness from another vehicle which required another 1/2hour or so of identifying wires, cutting, and splicing. Pleased with the purchase. I'm quite sure it will outlast my 02 Ody with 240000 miles. It should be easy to switch to my '12 Ody. when the time comes, since the same item number fits both years.
Delivered ahead of schedule! Solid, extremely well built.
installed on '08 honda odyssey, no drilling required but you need to lower the exhaust from the hangers. you will need socket wrench, torque wrench and may be an impact wrench and a lot of wd 40. Spray wd 40 on the hanger and hook. Use a tongue and groove plier to remove the metal exhaust hooks from the rubber hangers. Press one side of the plier on the metal hook and the other side on the back of the rubber hangers and use the leverage to remove it. Clean out all 6 bolt holes well with wd 40. I use an electric impact wrench to slowly screw and unscrew the bolts that comes with the hitch without actually installing the hitch. this process is to clean out the threads. Use plenty of wd-40 during the process to clean the hole and the threads on the bolts. you will see rust and dirty on the bolt threads. If the screw threads had rust and dirt, it will not have a good contact with the bolts and hard to screw in. It took an hour to clean all 6 holes carefully without cross threading. the actual installation of the hitch only took 10 min with some helps from a bounch of left over 2x4 as temp. support on one side. The hitch came with scratches in a few places. all the special paint applied is meaningless if they don't package it correctly and got damage during the shipping process. I touched it up with oil based paint and it not noticeable. I saved a few hundred by install this myself. you can do it too if you have the right tools and patience. It does not come with any electrical hook up. I only use it for a bike carrier so I don't care.
2012 Honda Odyssey. Item was in new condition when I received it. It shipped 1 day earlier than planned (only 4.95 shipping). Fit on the vehicle was good but not perfect. I had to grind out one of the bolt holes with a dremel tool to get the bolts to fit. Other recievers seem to come with metal plates that go between the hitch and the vehicle, this one did not. It might have been helpfulto have that as I was not able to torque these bolts to the full specification because it seems to be mashing a sheet metal seam somewhat and I did not want to push my luck. You will do well to get a 12mm 1.25 tap to clean out rusty threads on the vehicle if it is not a brand new vehicle. You can see the entire hitch from the back so if you are looking for something that is hidden when mounted, this is not it. I think it looks OK though. I only used the hitch for a bike rack.
The hitch was easy enough to install, although there were some slight alignment issues due to the way the hitch was welded together. It required more tools than listed in the instructions, such as two tapered punches . On the up side you do not have to remove the muffler as indicated. The hitch slides right over the tail pipe and the bolts are easily accessible. The job was made easier by using a floor jack to support one end. I only gave it four stars because the alignment added a few minutes to the job, be sure to check the nuts in the frame for any rust that may need to be cleaned out with a small wire brush.
It is exactly what I expected at the best price I could find. Installation was hard because of rusty bolt holes. That is no fault to the hitch though.
(1) The hitched was received with paint scratched off multiple locations and it looked like a used hitch. (2) To be fair, the hitch structurally looks OK. For this reason, I did not bother to return it. Rather, I painted the hitch. (3) Suggestion to other buyers, watch out if seller only got 1 review. I do not recommend the seller of this hitch although Reese Hitch is a reputable product.
I am in the process of ordering a third hitch in hopes of getting one that both fits and is undamaged. The bracket on the first hitch was so badly bent that it caused the paint to peel. I think it was 1.5 inches out of alignment. The second hitch's pre-drilled holes were incorrectly placed. There are three holes on each bracket and the two outside holes closest to the ends were too close together. Fortunately I had not yet returned the first hitch so I could see that it was a manufacturing defect on the second hitch. I read another review that mentioned that if there is no Reese decal that it is a factory second. Both do not have decals. I thought that I was getting a new out-of-the-box item, but it seems does not seem to be the case. The only redeeming factor is that it was easy to order through walmart.com and came quickly.
I, like two reviewers before me, am extremely disappointed with this purchase. First, the description clearly states that it is a class III hitch. Secondly, the photo in the online description clearly shows a hitch that looks like a Class III hitch. The part number shown in the description (51156) matches the part number for the same class III hitch that I've been shopping around for at several other stores. Of course, what they sent me was a Class II hitch rated at 2000lbs (instead of the 6000 lbs that I was expecting - please see the photos that I've attached here). Naturally, the part number shown on what they sent me is the correct part number (please zoom in on one of the photos that I've attached), just that it is the wrong part!! Very disappointed after a two-week long wait for shipping. To cap it off, and not that it matters to me since I have to return this tiny thing back to the store, the rust-proof paint is severely chipped on one of the mounting plates of the part. So there goes your rust-proofing!!
Horrible! This item arrived with paint peeling and had started to rust. After receiving it in such terrible condition I decided to return it. In the few weeks since I originally purchased this hitch I have noticed quite a few of them on the road and they have all been extremely rusty. Do yourself a favor and avoid Reese or Hidden Hitch. I eventually went with a Curt and couldn't be happier.
