part did not work
I give this only 2 stars because the disc drive only barely read a disc 2 times and wasn't even able to run them before saying unrecognized disc. Otherwise, I have spent hours trying to get this to work and all I get is the Open Tray error. Don't get this disc drive if you want to play Xbox 360 games on disc.
Summary: Don't buy this. It's not plug and play (you will have to do soldering just to get it to work), it's not new (and is unprofessionally refurbished. A corner of the circuit board inside was completely melted, and the entire board was dirty and the soldering was messy at best. I did a much better job with no experience.) This is boarder-line a scam. No where does it mention that you have to replace the circuit board, and no where does it say that it's used. I know Walmart is just the broker in this deal but I'm disappointed that they were involved at all. Photo of melted board included with review. Actual review: Don't buy this. Number 1, because it's not plug and play as you may think - If you just swap the old drive with this one then the Xbox will not play games, as it will think that the new drive is a dvd player. This is because the board in the disc drive and the motherboard in the Xbox are “married” meaning that the disc board has a unique digital key, which has to match up with the key on the motherboard for the drive to work properly. If your just having the “Open tray” error where the Xbox doesn't recognize that you inserted a disc, then you just have a problem with the optics, meaning that if you have the proper tools and a little patience, you can unsolder the board from the old drive and resolder it in the new one. This is what I did, because luckily we had a cheap soldering kit lying around from an old project. This is boarder-line a scam. The listing states these things: “Best quality Disc Drive For Microsoft Xbox 360 / Xbox 360 S (DG-16D4S / DG-16D5S” No way, it's a used drive unprofessionally refurbished. The board is melted and I did a better job soldering it with no experience. “Replace your old Disc drive to fix your console problems such as disc read errors, slow loading times, failure to read the disc.” If you just replace your old drive it wont work. You have to swap out the new one with the old one, or reprogram the new one using a computer, plus special software and a special cable. “Specifically designed for an exact fit to the console.” Of course it is because you didn't design it. It's a 13 year old official drive, that you refurbished and somehow melted an entire corner off of with your soldering iron. Photo of melted board included with review.
