I really like the 1034DX. It does a great job. I bought it as an introductory machine. I have never used a serger and wanted to make my sewn items look more professionally done. I was not disappointed. It is easy to learn and threading the machine was easier that i thought. I recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable machine.
I will have to admit that when I first got the serger I was very intimidated by it. Then I searched online for the “how to” adjust the tension for shears and silks. It took a bit of practice but I finally got the hang of it. My serger has been the best investment I had made. So happy with it.
I've had the brother 1034 DX for 3 months. It has been a great machine. It's my first serger and I was surprised how easy it was to get started. I'm still learning how to adjust for different fabrics and situations. If I were to change one thing, I would like more help with stitch adjustments. Also, the presser foot pressure knob is hard to turn. Overall I've been very pleased.
I have been sewing for some time now (close to 35 years) and never bothered with a serger. I always used pinking shears for a zigzag stitch to finish my seams. After doing some research (a ton of research) I finally buckled down and got a serger. Am I glad I did. This machine is amazing! It was a choice between this and the 1034D; the reason I chose the DX was because I'm right handed and it made more sense for me since the dials are all on the right hand side of the machine. I have used this to make rolled hems, sew with knit fabric, not use the cutting blade, use the blade, all making my projects look SO professional! It came threaded with four different colors of small spools, and looked simple enough to thread. It was more than simple enough; it was super easy! I can thread this thing in 5 minutes tops! I would say the only downside is that it's very loud. My honey says he knows when I'm using it because he can hear it downstairs. It almost sounds like it's cheaply made or not very sturdy when that is not the case. It may just be my table; I'm redesigning my sew happy room to accommodate all my Brother machines (4 and counting), so I'll know definitely once it's complete. One thing, please oil your machine before using or you could damage it. I read the manual before ever turning it on and it says on the last page (or second to last page) to oil her before using. Personally, I think that should be on the first page under BEFORE USING READ CAREFULLY. That seems like important information that shouldn't be seen as an afterthought in a manual. It doesn't come with oil, buy you can buy it from your local sewing supply store or the big chain sew/craft/hobby stores. The catch trap doesn't catch all the trimmings so make sure to open your machine and clean it out every time you use it. I bought cans of compressed air to keep on hand to clean my machine and get the "fabric dust" out. All that to say this machine was definitely worth it, which wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. I'm glad taking this long to get a serger led me to this one.
I am a retired Chef. Started sewing 1 1/2 yrs ago. I like the serger and it's features. I was scared at first but that got over quickly. It is very easy to thread and use. Thumbs up a new power tool!!!
This is the first serger I every purchased and I love it! Did some small projects to get used to it, but, really simple to learn! Highly recommend!
I love my machine and was reading some of the bad reviews and I'm just wondering if they oiled the machine before they used it, because if you don't things can go bad fast, it's in the back of the manual, it should be in the front in my opinion.
I love the serger pretty much. The light bulb burned out right away. I looked in the manual so I wouldn't have to waste any time changing the bulb. Guess what...The book just said "Your serger has an LED bulb and it will not have to be replaced". Boy did I feel bad. Y'all need to change that! Well, I got the bulb out. Now where do I buy one? Do I have to pay for a bulb that was never supposed to burn out? My review would be 5 stars if I didn't have to mess with this. It's really hard to sew without the light.
Might be a great machine but it didn't have a power cord with it. For the price I thought it should have one. All that was in box was machine CD and operation manual. It was a factory recondition so I figured it would have all the kinks worked out. Guess not.
