RODE VideoMic Me-L Directional Microphone for iOS

As a Spark reviewer, I was given this mic as a sample to test. I have an iPad and was intrigued by this mic, and excited to try it out! I wanted to wait until the N'easter got here to test it. I took my iPad, with the microphone, outside during the storm. I tested it three ways. First, I have the mic attached to my iPad without the wind guard. The second video is taken WITH the windguard on. And, the third is filmed with only the regular iPad mic. I think you will see quite a difference, though I didn't test for different effects due to distance. All the videos were taken while the ipad was in front of my face, about 1.5 ft. away. The only complaint I had was the quick start instructions which came with the mic. I had no idea what the separate plastic piece was, nor did I understand what the wind cover was for! Thankfully, there are several places on the internet where I could locate the info I needed. The mic is super simple to attach! Simply plug it into the charging port on your iPad, or iPhone, The separate piece can be attached to the bottom of the mic to keep it steady. I used it, but it didn't seem to be needed. The speaker is quite light and was firmly seated in the charging port without it. The mic fit easily into the port, and the separate piece fit easily on the bottom of the mic and over my iPad, and its cover. I found that the furry piece was a cover for the mic, used to cut out background noises. And, if it could cut out the wind of a N'easter, it can cut out a LOT of background noise! So, it passed my tests, and I'm looking forward to using it a lot in the future. In the past, I had videos where the voices were very difficult to hear. With this Rode microphone, that will no longer be a problem! Sadly, my videos won't upload! I'm sorry about that! So, you'll have to accept my word about the testing! Bummer! There are some videos on YouTube that you might find useful. They, too, did some testing of the mic. I think it's terrific.

This microphone works awesome for shooting videos! I was really surprised with the clarity of the sound. It is easy to use and works on my iPhone and my daughters iPhone also. The windshield is a cool piece that helps with the wind and doesn't get in the way. I really love that it works with both of ouriPhone models and I can use it with my iPad too. This is a great item and it's not to big to carry around with you! I highly recommend it.

This microphone works wonders for shooting videos! I was pleasantly surprised with the clarity of the sound it produces. It is easy to use and works on my iPhone XS Max. The windshield is a convenient piece that helps with wind control and does not get in the way. The microphone reduces any surrounding noises and focuses on picking up the audio. I love that it works with most iPhone models, iPad's, and iPod's. This is a great item to carry along wherever I go!

Rode's VideoMic Me-L is an amazing little microphone designed to operate with IOS devices (Apple iPhone, iPad). The box contained the VideoMic Me-L microphone, WS9 windshield, and a mic clip. I am not a savvy tech person but was interested in better audio quality for videos I shoot on my iPhone 8. As such, my review will be only on the most basic of functions of this mic. From what I've read, however, this mic offers more capabilities than I will use. First of all, I was disappointed that I had to remove my iPhone case to use the microphone. With the case left on, the mic was not secure and would have dropped off the iPhone. Even with the mic clip, the microphone was not secured to my phone. So, if I want to use the mic, I must remove my case first. Second con for me was that I could never locate a manual. There is a quick-start guide included but since I am not tech savvy, I would've liked to have a manual that explored all the possibilities with this mic. On the plus side, I am very pleased with the quality of sound this mic picks up – so much better than the iPhone mic. Plus, it effectively blocks out most, if not all, of the background noise. And the furry windshield definitely reduced the wind noise when recording outside. I really appreciate that. Be aware to handle the phone carefully while recording. I noticed some “handling” noise during my first recordings. All-in-all, I do recommend this product.

The Rode microphone videomic directional microphone really improves the audio when were making videos using my sons Iphone. Its pretty windy where we live and the furry windshield cuts down a lot of the sharp wind noise, he was abroad where they have sandstorms and audio got completely drowned out -he wishes he`d had this gadget back then but hes loving it now! Very handy for anyone who does video`s for social media. It also has a headphone jack in the back so you can hear exactly how clear it is.

I was quite impressed with this microphone. It's great for recording videos and it does a great job at picking up the voice and honing out outside noises.

Fits easily onto my iPhone 7 (and any device with a lightning plug). Useful when there is ambient noise. Works well by "focusing" on the object in front of the phone.

i tried it the other day and it gives a great sound of what you are recording, easy to use with your phone and the kids just loved it when they tried it.

The Rode Videomic ME-L is a small microphone designed for Iphones using Lightning ports hence the L in the name. It is for the Iphone owners who want a better quality of audio than the iphone can produce. It is made quite well of aluminum with a rubber stand that helps support it when attached to an iphone headphones can also be plugged into the end of the Rode microphone using the 3.5 mm jack. The microphone can be plugged into the lightning connector and used as normally or iphone can be used upside down which puts the microphone on top and seems to be a little more securely attached. I tried this microphone out in different conditions such a wind, rain, and background noise. I tried it out with and without the windshield ( the fuzzy ball) and found that unless facing directly into the wind the quality was close to the same as without the windshield however it did change dramatically when using in high wind conditions. I used the Rode Videomic to record my Granddaughters choir concert and at first i was sitting about 6 rows back from the choir during a rehearsal then i moved to the balcony to record the actual concert. When reviewing the footage taken i noticed that when i was 6 rows back it improved the audio over standard iphone audio but it also picked up unwanted audio that happened directly in front of me in rows 5 thru 1. The audio taken from the balcony was much further away but seemed to pick up less clutter and was a better quality audio without sacrificing a lot of volume. I would recommend this to anyone that wants quality sound to match a quality video.

Was just delivered. Who knows where it has been fir the past six months?! Very poor connection to iphone 6s. Constantly falling out. Called family and friends no one experienced enhanced sound. Feel it is a major waste of time and effort!
