It's a great bass for the price. It's perhaps a little bit smaller than your average bass... But overall it plays well.

Especially if your child plays for a school jazz band or something along those lines, this would be perfect, it's about full size neck but with a lighter smaller frame body, even if you're a larger built kid it won't look too ridiculous, I used one in my high school jazz band about 8 years ago, actually surprised they're still making this same one today, back then I bought the package deal for 154 from musiciansfriend, I loved being able to carry it anywhere as it was not bulky, it sounds fine with a basic 20 watt amp, and it plays easy. I'd say if you really wanted to play it at a venue replace the strings and you might be fine from there. Overall it lasted about 4 years before the neck started warping, but for a 120 dollar bass it's a great deal. Try it out, if you don't like it, try upgrading to the 200B since it's a full size body and neck bass, that's the only difference between the two. Hope this helps you decide.
