- just make sure your chassis is 10 inches deep or less, otherwise it will ride up on top of the lip at the front of the shelf, or turn the shelf upside down and make sure to physically secure the server to the shelf - yes it will work that way if you wan Pro: Con:- hard to come up with any cons; it's a very well-made shelf. - I guess maybe if your server depends on bottom-ventilation (not sure why a server would...) then depending on the location of vents, the slots in this shelf might not be enough for airflow.
I'm using this in my audio equipment rack, to facilitate swapping around of equipment. Much easier than screwing and unscrewing things from the rack! Pro: A very sturdy shelf – I can't imagine it failing in any normal usage. The two unit version has, of course, two screw holes on either side, and more metal on the side supports reaching to the back of the shelf, providing extra support for heavy stuff. The finish looks like a powder coat, which will be more scratch resistant than standard paint. The ventilation slots can double as attachment points, if needed. Con:As designed, the shelf is intended to use up two rack spaces below the shelf, which is fine if you want air ventilation space below the shelf. If for some reason you want something mounted directly below the shelf, you'll need to install the shelf upside down, with the side flanges pointing up. In this position, though, the lips across the front and back of the shelf point up instead of down, which will probably get in the way of whatever's on the shelf. It'll work, but may require some improvising to level the shelf.
The mounting attachments are ideal, approximately eighteen inched apart, suitable for attachment to the studs. What I looked like the bottom, likely is the top; denoted by manufacturer's logo. Included hardware & logo position; indicate its intended purpose, rack mounting is with perimeter lip up. Keeping in mind, this is a substantial serious protuberance requiring thoughtful attachment, when not used as intended (rack mounting), i.e., tool box. Not done properly, it represents a safety hazard. It doesn't stick out far enough for leverage to create an extraordinary problem. Weight can, use anchors appropriate for the task. Pro: It's a substantial piece of hardware; you'd expect to see at an industrial supply warehouse, more so than an electronic component outlet, unless you're looking specifically for rack hardware. Departing from its original intended use, rack mounted components, it's difficult to comprehend alternative uses until you see/ hold it. Call/use it whatever way you like; shelf, platform, bracket, it's a winner. It's capable of performing many functions, install it, horizontal right-side up/down - or – vertically. It appears to be surprisingly tough (weight/finish). Attachment points are well engineered. Slots intended for ventilation to serve as readily available attachment points; especially useful when mounted vertically or overhead. Mounted horizontally right-side up, reversed, it provides a lip to hold small items from dropping; mounted vertically, its accompanying slots offer numerous anchor points for all kinds of stuff; i.e Bungee hooks. It's substantial nature accommodates a myriad of one-off applications, i.e., vertical/overhead mount for 160 degree convex mirror. Use it as a platform for IP cameras with magnetic bases. Benefiting from a plug strip (tidy things up), amazing how well it'd suit it is for this application. Additionally, if you're not aware of the newest generation of magnets, Google N52, it's mind boggling what a substantial base like this is capable of accomplishing when joined to powerful magnets. Con:Absolutely none!!
