Avoid - Tons of Gritty Dry Spray Just Like Others

IHateJunkyStuff September 22, 2019

I've used Rust-Oleum products before on car parts and even painted cars with HVLP guns. Rust-Oleum and Walmart need to pull this from the shelves. I used this on a new trailer hitch, freshly sanded, cleaned, a and prepped. I sprayed between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit on several different days following the directions on distance exactly. I got tons of gritty dry spray on the surface. I switched to a can I had of Rust-Oleum self-etching primer and had no problems with that. I see that other reviews are stating the same results. Walmart, please pull this from the shelves.

Dry sprays, hard to sand, long cure times

Ryans June 18, 2018

This primer is TERRIBLE! I used it for priming a hood, which was a big mistake. Despite spraying at 12 inches, I still got 'dry spray' that left a coating of rock hard dust all over the finish. This would normally be fine as I was always planning to wet sand, however this primer is very difficult to sand as it dries very hard. Not only did it take three times longer to wet sand than other primers I've used, I went through half a package of 600-grit on a hood because it clogs the sand paper really bad. Also, let's talk dry times... With most other brand primers I could be wet sanding within 30 minutes from spraying. With this primer? 4 hours! I thought that was excessive, but even by the 3rd hour, I could tell it still wasn't fully hardened. I could have already been spraying the color coat had I used another brand of primer before I can even wet sand this stuff! Cure time for this? 24 hours! This leads me to believe it's an enamel-derived primer. The other big issue that absolutely grinds my gears is the spray nozzle, because it's horrible: it's a circular beam focused into a really small area, making it very hard to get any kind of equal coverage because you cannot overlap. This would be okay if you are painting something really small and narrow, but this product is advertised as automotive, meaning in it should be friendly to wider surfaces like panels. Rust-Oleumn should take a lesson from Duplicolor's 'fan style' wide spray nozzles, because the spray coverage on those nozzles are amazing. In fact, it is because of this terrible nozzle design that I am now not going to use Rust-Oleum brand for the color and clear coats (which have the same nozzle), as I know it will be impossible to get wide and even coverage.

Hard to use, watch out for dry spray

Steven August 14, 2021

I wish I had looked at the reviews for this paint before spraying it. I am painting a bumper and like the others I apparently experienced dry spray and I am not looking forward to fixing it. The spray patter is way too tight. I have used primers in the past and never had any as hard to use as this. I am very disappointed.
