The 2019 Galaxy Tab 8: A good starter tablet

technovator October 18, 2020

(Please excuse the quality of the screenshots, I have cheap screen protector on the tablet, but you can still see the clarity of the display, which is even more impressive in person). The 2019 Galaxy Tab 8 Tablet is a good starter tablet for three groups of people: 1. People that are new to tablets and want a form factor that is convenient and easy to carry, but offers greater display size over their cell phone. Eight inches may not sound like much if you have a 6.5 inch phone, but it truly does open up alot more use cases and is far easier on the eyes. 2. People who have a larger tablet and want something smaller for reading in bed, keeping in the car, or on a side table etc, without feeling that they risk the theft of an expensive unit. At approx $129 the 2019 galaxy tab is not going to break the bank if it gets lost or stolen. 3. Children that are new to tablets, need (or want) a true android experience and need something capable of handling most of the latest games and apps with ease. Beyond that, most other people would probably want to look at the stronger, faster, and/or larger offerings of Samsung and Apple for the best tablet experience. PROS: 1. Great price for Samsung quality, specifically Glass front, aluminum back, plastic frame... feels really solid in the hand. Note: It (arguably) does not get much better than Samsung for Android or Apple for iPadOs (Note: Apple IOS was recently split into IOS for iphones and iPadOs for tablets as development will likely diverge to take advantage of each type of devices strengths). 2. Really nice, clear and bright 8.0 inch TFT display. 3. Solid recent gen quad-core proceesor (Quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A5) 4. 2GB of RAM which is now definitely needed for the latest apps to run smoothly. 5. Small and Light at a weight of 345 grams (12 ounces) and dimensions of 210mm x 124.4mm x 8 mm ( 8.27 x 4.90 x 0.31 in). 6. Expandable storage via built-in MicroSD slot (upto 512GB MicroSD cards are supposedly supported). 7. Decent 8MP camera on back and 2MP on front (but see cons regarding camera quality). 8. Nice array of sensors: Bluetooth 4.2 LE (low energy) with AD2P, GPS, as well as an Accelerometer. 9. Runs latest Android (as of this review date) called Android 9.0 (Pie)... and supposedly will support (at least) the next version of Android (version 10) CONS: 1. Very difficult to grip with a case... mainly due to the rounded edges... this is remedied by a good case and most people go that route anyway. 2. Only 32GB of internal storage... while (as mentioned) it does have a microSD slot, there are limitations as to what the microSD card can be used for (versus it’s internal storage)....part of this is by Samsung’s design , so Samsung could eventually loosen the restrictions... Example: Apps must be stored on internal storage...of which approx 12GB is already used out of the box by the Android operating system... this is primarily the biggest non-hardware related complaint since this is not an Android restriction, but rather (as far as I have read) a restriction intentionally placed on this tablet by Samsung. NOTE: Due to the massive complaints about this issue, there us a chance (albeit a very small one) that Samsung could release a firmware patch to remove this restriction. 3. Speakers are quite anemic... Only two speakers at the base and even at max volume you would need to be in a fairly quite room to hear everything clearly. Headphone jack located at top mitigates this to a degree. 4. Screen resolution is low even compared to most cellphones at only 800x1280 pixels. Note screen is quite bright and very easy to read, but certainly very far away from retina level resolution. 5. Cameras are serviceable, but suffer from serious motion blur especially at less than ideal lighting conditions (think indoor lighting). BREAK-EVEN features (good or bad depending on your situation): 1. MicroUSB connector, not USB-C : The good is most people have plenty of MicroUSB cables and accessories already, the downside in USB-C is the future, is reversible, and much, much faster. CONCLUSION: A good solid, quality, inexpensive tablet at a very affordable price from one of the most reputable manufacturers in the industry. Great starting point for people new to tablets or those needing smaller (and inexpensive) second tablet for basic reading, surfing, news, youtube streaming, movies watching, etc. HOWEVER, not a great option for people who use a lot of different apps or use demanding apps. Also, not a good choice for those who require either a high quality camera (though quite good for stills, and video chatting) and/or a tablet with powerful speakers.

Great tablet for all ages

FamilyOfFive October 17, 2020

I have been using this tablet for a couple days and have found some features that I really love. The packaging was easy to open and everything I needed to get started was right at my fingertips upon opening the box. The instructions were clear, and I really didn't even need to read the pamphlet, as the on screen instructions led me through the set-up process pretty easily. This Samsung Galaxy tablet was extremely easy to get started with. I have never had a Samsung Galaxy product before, but if I had had one, I could have uploaded all my documents/pictures/files using the cloud that Samsung provides. This was also an option using my google drive, so that was nice. I had a couple issues getting all my files transferred over, but I overall, it was a seamless process that worked quite well. The set-up took me about 30 minutes from start to finish, and I was ready to begin installing my apps within 20 minutes. I opted out of the option to install all the apps I use on my phone, because I am going to use the tablet for reading and more pleasure-type activities than work-related. I attached a picture so you can get a good idea about the size. This is my number one complaint about the product. I am a female, and I have really small hands, so this size is awkward for me. I need to use two hands to hold it steady, and it is a little cumbersome feeling to me. My husband tried the tablet, and he didn't feel this way, so it just depends on the size of your hands. I'm sure the average person would find this table to be a nice sized device. It's not overly heavy, so sitting in bed and reading is no problem. I would say that it weighs much less than the average chapter book. The tablet connected seamlessly to my WIFI and the internet worked really well. I was able to download my mail app and it worked great once I got everything signed in. The charging time took around an hour to completely charge the device, and it came with the charging cable AND wall outlet adapter. this was really nice because most electronics these days only come with one or the other. The charger is a micro USB cable, so it's pretty standard across the board with other charging devices. The only thing I wish it had come with is a screen protector and/or a case. I always feel like a tablet or phone feels so breakable without a case or screen protector. So, if you buy this tablet, make sure you find a good screen protector and case to go along with it. Overall, this is a great tablet with multiple different uses. This would be a great tablet for any age. It's easy enough for younger and older individuals to figure out and versatile enough to be used for many different realms. I'm excited to be able to download some books and games!

Great little tablet!!

SDNJIN October 22, 2020

I absolutely love this little tablet! I have had a wonderful time getting to know how it works and getting it set up specifically for me. It’s bigger than my phone, but not huge. I play Solitaire and Sudoku games on it instead of my phone because I can see better on the tablet. I also downloaded the kids messenger app so I can video chat with my grandsons. This tablet is fast and has a very clear picture (my son said it’s got good resolution). I also like to take and view pictures and with this tablet since I can see them much easier. I am 55 years old so I am at the point that I enjoy the small comforts like these. I am waiting on a case that has a loop for my hand to hold the tablet easier and to protect the tablet itself from drops. I would definitely recommend this tablet to anyone who wants something bigger than a phone but I honestly think I’d like the tablet to be a little larger maybe a 10 inch instead, but other than that I can’t complain, it’s been good!

Nice "Starter" Tablet

DalTxJim November 3, 2020

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 is the 2019 version using Android version 10 after updates. The tablet is rather heavy at 12+ ounces, especially when trying to hold for longer periods of time. The display is very nice, clear and shows good colors. When adding various apps, be prepared for rather lengthy lag times. The more apps, the more lag time. The lag time is the reason for my "starter" remark. The good price point will allow you to determine if a tablet is what you need. It would also be a good starter tablet for the under 16 crowd. This version does NOT connect via cellular. It is Wi-Fi ONLY. Connection to Wi-Fi was easy and reliable. A good buy with limitations.

Galaxy Tab A Great for Off-Roading

Wildflower October 25, 2020

This Samsung Galaxy Tab A is a solid little tablet, with 32gb of memory. The ability to add a SD card for additional storage (with limitations) it is sure to meet most of my needs. The tablet runs Android 9.0 and is easily set up within minutes of receiving. This is a WIFI only tablet. Galaxy Tab A does offer a minimal bezel thus allowing maximum viewing on this handy sized 8" tablet. The adaptive brightness display is responsive and battery which is 5,100 AH supports a charge which surpasses most tablets in this price range. The camera is adequate at 8MP rear and 2.0 front lens. The video recording is set at 30 fps. Offers a headphone jack and has a great little speaker with adequate bass. The most substantial con for this little tablet primarily applies to the expandable external memory up to 512gb micro SD card can be added but no ability to move apps onto the card, preventing customized usage which hampers the average user. The tablet arrives with 40% of internal memory dedicated, I have not yet attempted to remove bloatware to truly customize this tablet to fit my lifestyle. Additional negatives are the lack of the USB-C charger and inability to wirelessly charge and the lack of auto shut down and/or startup when a magnetic cover is closed, all relatively minor cons. Yet enough backwards movement from Samsung to downgrade overall rating by one star. I tend to chart and track off road trails and this little gem will certainly provide the ability to do so while being financially feasible.

Like having my phone in my hand

CoolCookie48 November 4, 2020

It’s pretty cool to use instead of squinting to view things on my phone. It really is like having my cellphone in my hand and I love my Samsung phone. Moves smoothly between programs. One thing I couldn’t easily locate a lot of the apps I have on my phone. May just need more time to tinker around with it. It’s light and the battery life is really good. Went days without using or turning it on for long and the battery power was still decent for the length of time. My kids want it! It’s mine....all mine!

Sleek Thin Lightweight Tablet Great Battery Life

Tanyakirk74 October 19, 2020

I have owned this SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab A 8.0 32 GB WiFi Android 9.0 Pie Tablet - SM-T290NZKAXAR for about 4 or 5 weeks as of this review. During this time I have really tried it's operating system out. PROS: This new Galaxy Tab A 8.0" allows me to create notes, surf the web, watch you tube videos, play different styles of games, watch my favorite tv shows and movies with good enough data upload and download speeds. It's lightweight and thin design is extremely comfortable to hold in my hands with it's ever so sleek, lightweight and thin design. I am really impressed with it overall. It has a  long-lasting battery, which is a positive feature that's important to me because I tend to stay on my devices for hours. I do not like when my battery runs down quickly which interrupts whatever I'm doing. Another upgraded feature that I think is important is it's expandable memory capacity. This allows for more storage without bogging down because its overloaded. Absolutely LOVE that Samsung designed this tablet with the buttons on the screen plus there is no hardware navigation buttons! Absolutely positive upgraded feature that I commend the makers for. The screen is larger than some tablets I've owned with very clear graphics and words with brilliantly bright colors that attracted my eyes! This feature is one of my favorites because larger screens are easier for me to manage and clearly see. This tablet has amazing visual graphics that are extra crisp and clear! CONS: At times the processor does run a little slow, at times. It could be a much better tablet if the  processor had been created to run faster. Another con,  I've noticed that since there is no screen protector included in the original product box, the screen does easily get scratches that's visible to my eye when screen is solid black. I'd recommend a screen protector prior to usage especially by children. Overall, my pros about this Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.0, Pie Tablet super exceeds my cons. I would definitely recommend this tablet for children and adult usages. It's value, to me, exceeds is responsible cost and therefore I feel this product is definitely worth it.

Good for someone like me who doesn’t game

Johnfar67 October 30, 2020

This is my first tablet. At first, I had issues trying to get through the set up. It wouldn't let me get passed the QR code when setting up the wifi. My niece helped me get it setup and have it updated. Once I got to the home screen, it lagged while the tablet was updating and trying to navigate the tablet. Once the updates were completed the tablet started running smoothly. This tablet is sturdy, and well built and not too heavy. The back camera takes good pictures for a tablet; but the front camera is a little grainy. It seems to be great for scrolling on Facebook, looking through emails, and searching the internet. Playing any games from the play store does make the tablet run a little slower at times. Overall, I like this tablet. I would recommend it if you're like me, using it for Facebook, using it for emails, or searching the internet. If you're looking to play some of the Google play games, it may lag or slow down.

A pretty good tablet but too slow

GuitarKY October 21, 2020

The size of this tablet and the looks of it are very nice. It has a really good display. The camera works well and it connects to Wi-Fi and also my phone's hotspot very easily. My biggest concern was the speed of the tablet. This is not going to operate at the same speed as any phone that has been made in the last couple years. Currently it is updating the software for the third time. On the second update, it updated to Android 10. I would put this tablet in a category of use by a beginner or for children. It just doesn't have the speed needed for today's apps. However again it looks really nice and it works without any errors so far so that's a plus

Basic tablet but could have been better

Tab October 15, 2020

This tablet is an extension if you own a galaxy phone, in which case I do. Samsung could have done a better job with this tablet in my opinion. There is no NFC transfer on this tablet so you will have to transfer all your files through a USB cord. Also the camera is not great in low light settings. If you want a tablet to listen to music and watch YouTube on, this is fine for that. Checking emails are a breeze and it makes Instagram look fabulous. Overall I'm satisfied with it.
