Sangean Portable AM/FM Radios, Gray, ATS-909X2

I really like the SANGEAN ATS-909X2 portable multi-band radio. The various tuning capabilities, the high sensitivity, the excellent selectivity and "soft mute" all contribute to a fun, useful and attractive choice for a versatile portable radio. There are a few competitors that come close to this radio in overall competence, but none are superior. You will even see, online, a dozen reviews that are biased toward Communist China's radio offerings (Tecsun, et al). NONE of the reviews directly compare the selectivity and sensitivity...because they will fail or be equal. Some mention the "soft mute" as a FLAW! Even though that function can be turned OFF! This Taiwanese (Sangean) offering is in MY opinion the best truly portable Shortwave AM/FM radio on the market.

This Sangean multi-band radio is the best quality portable radio receiver one can purchase, and Walmart online has the best price by far. I did my homework both on features and price. Walmart online got this one right.

I like it had 5 bandwidths , the effective 3 steps tone control , the improved speaker sound clarity, I didn’t found any volume changes on real SSB signals, but only switched to AM radio broadcasts on SSB then the volume was 50% lower! Maybe it’s a design flaws?! But the overall performance is good enough for a portable radio!

My expectancy was for much better single side band performance. Even with improvements Sangean made with prior model, bandwidths available are still too wide. FM and MW, as well as general shortwave, are very good.

This radio is very good quality however if you do not have shortwave experience and how it works this radio may be too complicated to navigate. It is a very well made radio though.

Successive generations of engineers have tried to improve on the original ATS-909 only to make it progressively worse. My ATS-909X2 was a version 73 so the bugs I read about in the earlier version were not addressed at all. There were synthesizer tones on the AM band, especially in the lower end. At times they were so bad, they prevented me from hearing a semi-local station. They were also very unpredictable in their behavior but persisted whether I used the internal ferrite rod or an outdoor antenna. Sometimes while manually tuning on AM to the next frequency, the synthesizer would fail and there would be nothing heard unless you went back to the previous frequency, then back again. The new automatic bandwidth control on AM, LW
