I'm originally from Japan. I always enjoy this Japanese curry paste. It's same product I was used to use in Japan. Tasty. The best value at Walmart.
Makes great curry!!!
I wish walmart.ca carried this curry roux more consistently. It is easy to use, and it makes absolutely delish curry.
I buy this every time I stop in to a local Walmart. I usually get three boxes, add cooked chicken breast, sautéed onions, diced carrots and a few diced potatoes. I let it cook for a while to let the flovor develop. I do wish they carried the hot and extra hot one at the store, or with an option to buy online but not in a case. I add a small amount of red pepper flakes to give it that extra hotness. I serve it over white rice. Not the healthiest meal, but once in a while we just have a taste for it. I worked at a Japanese store when I was a kid, and that is where I first tried it. I've been eating it ever since. My three grown children also make it and everyone that let taste it, loves it.
This is the best tasting curry sauce and the easiest to make - take it from me, I'm an east indian single guy who loves curry and loves to cook good quick tasty meals. Don't know how to cook? Do this: Get a small sauce pan (small pot in guy language) Add one cup of water to it plus 2/3 cup milk. Break off two pieces of the curry roux from package and put in with water/milk (equivelent to one and 2/3 cup sauce when done) - set mixture on low or medium low. Come by your mixture every 2 or 3 minutes and give a quick stir so it doesn't stick. (Btw, it takes about 7 to 10 minutes for pieces of curry roux to dissolve, then another 10 minutes to thicken up nice) - keep it on low and stir occasionally. So, what do you do while the curry sauce is thickening? You prep and cook your meat and vegetables. In a fry pan or shallow sauce pan put 2 or 3 tbs of olive oil - warm it up on medium heat. Cut up your meat (chicken or beef). I cut it up to bite size pieces so it cooks faster and easier to manipulate while eating. If you have a cheaper cuts of meat, I fry it for about thee minutes and then boil it with an additional one cup of water. Boiling it will break the meat down and make it more tender. If regular meat and chicken, stir fry until cooked thoroughly through. While you are frying the meat and it is about half way done, chop up quarter or half an onion and throw it in with your meat. If you don't like shopping for vegetables, buy one of the many types of frozen packaged veggies - they are economical and easy to cook. In a medium sauce pan (medium size pot) add about 2 or 3 inches of water, bring to boil. Once water boiling, throw your winter veggie mix in (add about double the amount you eat, so you have enough for lunch or dinner tomorrow). Winter veggie mix is cauliflower and broccoli. Boil veggies for about 5 to 8 minutes. All while you do your meat prep/cook/ as well as veggies - stir your curry sauce every few minutes. This isn't rocket science, it's easy. You can impress your parents, your friends, and even that girl who you know that likes you (or guy, for that matter). When meat is done, veggies cooked, put on your plate and pour some of the curry sauce over top of the meat and veggies - Seriously, it is sooooo goood. Soooo easy to make. You'll be a master at it. Cook some rice on the side if you like it. Yield on the curry sauce, as stated above, is about one and two thirds cup of curry. How far will this go? When I am single, it lasts me four meals. If I have a girlfriend over eating with me, it will last two meals. Left over curry sauce, just put in a container (once cooled off) cover it up, put in fridge, use within a few days. I actually got into a deep conversation about this curry sauce in curry aisle at WalMart Uptown (town and country back then) with a woman I met (years and years ago). We met a second time in the curry ailse a week or so later and she ended up taking me home with her a few days after that (yes, to cook!) - I cooked for her and showed her a few cooking techniques I use. She was impressed. She is probably, sadly, married now. Sad for me, that is, not her. She was a real cutie back then and I happened to be dating someone else back then unfortunately. See, easy peezee eh. Anyone can do it. Now you can to. Love cooking, it is easy and you don't starve (or end up eating at the fast food place.)
If you love carribean curry, then you will LOVE this mix! It was really easy to make, however, I modified the cooking method and cooked mine in a slow cooker on high for 3.5 hours with cut up chicken breast, frozen veggies and potatoes. It has a good mix of flavors, very savory and rich. The description says Japanese curry, but it came out tasting EXACTLY like the curry chicken I would buy from a Jamaican food restaurant!
I lived in Okinawa Japan for 2 yrs and fell in love with Coco's Ichibana curry house. This curry is as close as I can get to that Japanese curry taste. I recommend cooking some diced bacon and onion and then add the curry paste and water. I usually eat it with chicken strips chopped up and cover it with shredded Colby jack cheese. Trust me it's delicious.
Easy to use; just follow the directions. Tastes very good. Sometimes I put meat in there, but most times only vegetables.
Happy that Walmart still carries this product since another major supermarket store has decided to drop it. The product is consistently good.
This makes an excellent curry sauce. Beware--it is not an Indian curry, but rather is a Japanese curry. It comes as a "bar" that you break up into chunks and put into a boiling pot of meat and vegetables. It serves as a roux that flavors and thickens the liquid. I enjoyed it. What I DID NOT LIKE was that when I purchased it on Walmart.com, I paid the $2.66 for the curry, but then they added another $5 for shipping it to me. NO, it's not worth paying that much for it! Will not buy this again for that reason. If my local store carries it I'll definitely get it.
