I got this bike as a toy for myself. Two years ago I got my kid a BMX bike so that he could learn to ride. After he learned, he was able to come with me while I ran 2 miles (sometimes 3). It gave us yet another way to spend and do things together. Then two months ago, my wife learned how to ride a bike and we got her the 24 inch women's/girl's Sidewinder. I decided to get this bike just to ride with her. It is fun. I am 5-8 and the bike fits perfectly. I got the seat post as the max height (minimum insertion) but getting an extra long seatpost (14 inches) as a final adjustment. Since we ride mostly on pavement and as exercise we'll probably change the tires for road/slick tires. All in all, the pricing and the quality (it is a lot of bike for around $200) makes this bike an affortable "toy" to keep you active and having fun. (part of the fun is to upgrade the parts, it is a good frame). Since I am all for the fun, I decided to stick some camo duck tape on it. It looks nice. People look twice at the unusual color. I added a milk crate because it is very useful to haul groceries and the lock and chain. Buying (and getting it back home) stuff while on bike rides is never a concern.
This mountain bike has all the bells and whistles you want on a mountain bike. The picture doesn’t do any good when buying. But when you see it in person your mouth will drop, it’s a beautiful bike.
Fluorescent green color paint job is awesome. Got it on sale. Very strong steel but lightweight body with dual disk brakes. Shimano 21 gear ratio is same as pro mountain bike. It’s better to call ATB. All terrain bike. Tires are nice. Very smooth on paved or gravel trail. Front suspension is on stiffer side. Handle bar position is just right. But seat is a shame. Not cheap rather bad engineering. I will replace it with something wider. Out of the box I assembled the front wheel, the handle bar, paddles, front disk brake. Adjusting front disk brake was easy with a YouTube video. Top of that Schween brand name. It’s the same experience and look and equipment as cannondale or specialized brand with much lesser price tag of $280-$380 in retailers MSRP.
As others have posted we ended up with the same problem of the front wheel disk for the brake dragging on the brake assembly. We figured out how to resolve the issue and it works great now. The problem is not that the forks are misaligned it is because the wheel needs to be adjusted on the axle. Here are the steps: 1. You will likely need a 15mm wheel hub axle adjustment wrench. These are pretty cheap 2. On each side of the bearings you will see two nuts. These are not the nuts that hold the wheel on they are right up against the hub when you take the wheel off. Loosen the nuts on the opposite side of the disk break and tighten the nuts on the disk break side. BE VERY CAREFUL because bearings are loose and will fall out. DO NOT overtighten the hub nuts as this will cause the bearings to drag. 3. We ran into an issue where the nuts on the disk brake side were seized on the axle. We ended up having to take the axle out, put the axle in a vice and use a large wrench to get enough leverage to break it free. Be careful not to scratch up the axle or mash the threads. Once all four hub nuts were free we were easily able to adjust the wheel position on the axle and align it properly. I hope this helps save you some time!! This bike is a great bike for the price and it is worth the time to adjust. If you are looking for easily assembly this is probably not the bike for you. If you are willing to invest a little time and have a little know how it may be a great deal!
the delivery came and I was notified when it got delayed but I was never in worried I wasn't going to get it so that was good the one thing I didn't like was it cost almost as much to get it put together as it did for the bicycle itself so I'm still waiting for someone to help me put it together cuz I can't afford both
After reading the reviews, I was prepared for the worst, abd sure enough the first bike I received had the front wheel lugs on the firks were terrible mis-aligned. I was able to get the wheel mounted, but the misalignment caused the disc brake to drag badly. I boxed it up and took it back for a refund. The store I returned it to didn't have a another ine in stock, so I was forced to order it online for delivery. the second bike had the proper fork alignment, and the wheel slide right it, and the disc brake had minimum drag due to being slightly bent This bike is a great value once you get a good one. It makes all the hassle worth it in the end.
The first bike came with the drop out terribly out of alignment. Like not bent either, they were both welded on crooked and then a brace welded on between the two forks after the others were installed crooked. Even the caliper mounts were crooked. The right side was at least an inch off from the left and then both on the wrong angle. I've never seen a screw up this bad in my life, I don't know how it got past QC. That being said walmart made it right and had me a new bike on my door step the day after Christmas, 2 day delivery. The replacement bike was aligned correctly. It did require that all the brakes and the derailleur be adjusted. I saw some other reviews about the chain popping off, that's because these derailleurs aren't set correctly before shipping it looks like. It was catching the edge of the chain on the smallest gear and pushing it off the cog. 10 second fix using the adjustment screws. The front brake was great, the rear brake needed the cable pulled a little tighter through the clamp on the calipler. It's a heavy bike. You're not getting anything extravagant in this price point, but it's great for my 8 year old son to grow with, he loves it, it looks sharp and it has a lifetime warranty as any other Schwinn has. Very happy with the purchase now that the replacement has arrived.
Negatives: This bike required a pretty significant amount of adjustment after purchase. Not too surprising as I ordered direct from Walmart.com so the bike was not setup at all. Front derailleur wouldn't shift into the largest chainring, was off in both height and rotation, and required cable tension adjustment. Both the front and rear disc brakes calipers were misaligned resulting in significant drag until corrected. Rear derailleur is not a Shimano Tourney as pictured, and also required a bit readjustment to shift into all gears. Steel frame so it's REALLY heavy (37.6 lbs.) Positives: Looks cool Low seat height, fits a 9 year old well, should fit for at least 2 years. Disc brakes means that wheel deformation issues (running into curbs, non-true wheels) won't affect braking. Trigger shifters because twist shifters are the worst. Bottom line: It's worth the $200 but not a penny more. It's a bit of a project when you get it, and few bike shops will agree to set it up for you (and if they do it could be another $100 in labor and now you should have just bought that bike shop bike anyways), but once setup it's serviceable and should last a few years as your kid grows. I got what I expected, nothing more. I would not recommend this bike unless you are an experienced bike mechanic, or willing to watch a bunch of youtube videos and become one. If you know how to setup a bike and diagnose issues the sizing is spot on for a kid, but the weight could be a major factor if your child isn't pretty strong. In the end, I got what I paid for, but probably wouldn't buy it again.
2nd time buying. 2nd time it comes damaged. Customer service is horrible and manufacturers almost impossible to contact. Spend the money and get a good bike that will come with no issues and you can use without spending money to have it fixed rather that return it again. Sorry rant over..
Please do not buy this bike. I bought one for my son and it has been a pain in the neck from the beginning. I am handy man but still failed to tune the gears because it is impossible. After so many trial finally had the gears tuned. Then the kickstand came loos in a few weeks so the bike fell off couple of time and the handles broke. Ordered from Shwinn the same issue happened. This bike is not worth even $0 - avoid a big headache and buy a brand other than Shwinn.
