Shout! Factory - Murder by Death [BLU-RAY]

A great hard to find movie with an all-star cast, Murder By Death is one of the funniest “whodunnit” movies you will ever see. Repeat viewings are highly recommended and the Shout Factory blu ray is, as expected, top quality picture and sound.

Neil Simon is… an acquired taste. I took dozens of theater classes in college and high school, and I always had an instructor who insisted on exposing us to the works of Neil Simon. I really believe that his plays and screenplays are stuck in the ‘60s and ‘70s. I thought ‘Murder by Death' would be a delightful little parody of closed-circle murder mysteries of the 1930s and 1940s, however I wasn't all that charmed. The cast - not the characters, but the actors - is what drew me to ‘Murder by Death'. I mean… how can we go wrong with Maggie Smith, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Elsa Lanchester, Truman Capote, James Cromwell, and so on…? There were a few puns and references that made me chuckle, but only in the same way that I would laugh at dad jokes. I think the thing that Neil Simon forgot when he wrote this comedic murder mystery was that all cozy murder mysteries are already funny without the need to try so hard. The dialogue didn't come off as sharp, but intrusive. There were too many one-dimensional characters and not enough focus given to the right ones. I just found ‘Murder by Death' to be mildly and mildly mysterious. I feel I need to watch ‘Gosford Park' as a palette cleanser.
