It's OK if all you need to do is have it hold ITSELF to a steel surface, for instance if you stick it to a photo and put it on your fridge or shop-toolbox, that works alright. But the magnet isn't very strong - the material is really thin and you don't get good magnet strength unless you have thicker magnetic material. So, if you're trying to use it to hold up other items, it won't work very reliably - if you just slightly bump it, it'll fall off the steel surface - this is UNLIKE (for instance) some of the thicker better-quality magnetic business cards that you might have seen around - those DO make really good fridge/toolbox magnets because you can put other papers underneath them and they'll still hold on strong. But this product was evidently not designed for that; presumably they had to keep it thin for acceptable use in cutting machines. I even tried layering this product, in an attempt to increase its magnetic strength (because I figured I might as well try to get SOME use out of this material instead of throwing it away) - I got a SMALL but barely-noticeable improvement. I ended up buying a different product which has a thicker/stronger magnetic material (at the time of this writing, Walmart sells them as "Kids Craft 18pk Magnetic Strips", I don't think we're allowed to post links here though), which works better for my needs although that Kids Craft brand is probably too thick for a cutting machine. Bottom line, the Silhouette product is OK for putting a neatly-trimmed custom-shape photo of your kid/car/cat/whatever on your fridge, but it's NOT a heavy-duty magnetic material by any means.
