I bought this as a birthday gift for my grandson and my son said he loves it. This young man wants to be an astronaut & he just turned 5 on 3/13. Just amazing.
I bought this for my nephew's birthday, he is just starting to be interested in space stuff and how the galaxy is and when he opened this he couldn't wait to put it up in his room.. he turned 10.. very easy to put together also.. and it really does glow in the dark...
I thought this would be a little bit bigger. Other than that my son loved the gift. He is into all solar system toys.
My grandchild is eager to learn about the solar system is the reason I purchased this online. The Planets that hang from the ceiling are so much smaller than I had expected for the price. The Earth is about the size of a marble and there is no paperwork telling what "ball" is supposed to be what planet. You can tell the earth because it has a semblance of green, painted "countries" on it. I am so glad that I waited until it went on sale before I purchased it. I still paid way too much for it. The original price was $20++ but I paid around $15. If I had visually laid eyes on it I probably wound not have bought it.
There really isn't much to this product, in the way of assembly but the real disappointing feature is that the planets don't glow in the dark at all really. Unless they're pointed out to you and you get right up next to them, you would never notice them at all. You would be better off hanging the box (that it came in) up. It's much prettier. I just tried to take a photo of the 'glow in the dark' planets, but it would be a waste of time to download it. I honestly didn't, but it looks just like I took a picture and left the lens cap on the camera.
very disappointed bought this for my son these planets do NOT glow in the dark at all, left a light on all day then even tried a day of sunlight, nothing... Huge disappointment not worth the money worse than the money is the disappointment on a child's face..
This product was cheaply made and the finished product does not look like the picture. You must tape the "fishing line" to the ceiling (tape not included). There is very little "fishing line" so the planets are very close to the ceiling and it looks terrible.
Guess I expected too much from this item.... figured with SMITHSONIAN written across it..... packaging genius!!! Product not so much!!! Mine doesn't even glow in the dark!!! Smh.... just looks li
All of my kids got science related items for Christmas. This one was a total, royal, sad, flop. The planets are small, they don't glow, and half of them cracked when I tried to hang them. Such a disappointment. I would have been better off with my original plan of making my own planets. I am just so mad at myself for not reading reviews before buying them.
This Smithsonian Solar System is not worth the purchase price. The pictures and words on the box make it look as though the planets glow in the dark, but they don't glow at all, even when "charged" in daylight for hours. In addition, they are a pain to hang up. The kit includes large eye hooks that you have to screw into the planets and then cut thin fishing-line-like strings for them, tie them, and then tape them to the ceiling. Well, there's no tape included, and you'll pull your hair out trying to tape fishing line to the ceiling. We used 3M strips in the end. Don't waste your money on these unless you can buy the kit for less than ten dollars.
