These are dietary fibers that have a positive effect on the intestinal microflora. FOS are plant oligosaccharides, obtained mainly from tuberous plants such as chicory, leeks and onions. FOS pass undigested to the large intestine where they serve as food for intestinal bacteria.

FOS are not digested in the small intestine but pass into the colon intact, where they are fermented by gut bacteria. This fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which have various health benefits, including supporting gut barrier function and reducing inflammation.

To avoid taking a supplement you can get FOS from foods such as asparagus, but this can be good to take temporarily if you have a lot of gut problems. Zinc can be a good idea as it helps the gut heal.
