Great Investment

DanniTraveler January 2, 2017

We were facing a particularly busy travel season and were carpooling with family. We needed as much extra space as we could get and after looking over a variety of products and reviews we decided on this because it was one of the largest and did not have the negative feedback about contents getting wet. It arrived and we were able to attach it to our 2010 Subaru Outback easily with only the factory rail kit. My husband probably could have done it by himself if necessary - it is light and easy to move. Once attached, we loaded it up with presents on the way down and with three extra large suitcases on the way back up. The height of the container is a little shorter in the very front but opens up almost immediately. It held a surprising amount of stuff and weight. It did rain while we traveled 1000 miles but the contents remained dry and secured. When I purchased it, I felt like the price point was high but it was well worth it for us and I am happy with its performance.

Cross country move

CallMeColt September 12, 2013

I purchased this to carry my clothes and other lighter things on top of my vehicle while moving across the US from CT to TX. On the way, I hit all types of weather. HEAVY rain, extreme heat, clouds of bugs, etc. When I arrived and un-packed it, nothing was wet at all. It did not come loose, or make an noise. Did what I needed to do! The locking system works well. I had a friend pull down on the lid while I locked it because it was that full, and it did not come lose at all.

SportRack Vista XL

HappyCamper978 April 15, 2014

Fit perfectly on a Chevy Suburban. High quality product at 50% the price of well-known manufacturers like Yakima and Thule...eventhough this product is also made by Thule. I have driven with the cargo box in rain and high winds at speeds of 75mph+, and I couldn't tell it was up there. I opened it the next day and there were only 2 quarter sized pools of water in the front corners, but due to the ridges on the bottom of carrier, none of the contents were wet. My only complaint is the plastic wingnut attachment. I suppose they would be ok if you had to remove the cargo box quickly, or often, but I do not. I wanted a somewhat permanent attachment, so I purchased flat washers and locking fiber nuts to replace the plastic wing nuts. On a side note, I do always carry around 50lbs of weight in the carrier (my family tent) as recommended by the manufacturer.

just what we needed

DelawareTravelers August 10, 2014

We were making a 12 hour drive for vacation and needed to store 3 sets of golf clubs on top of our mid-size SUV (Toyota Highlander). This product was easy to install, easy to load, and had much more room than expected. In addition to the clubs, we were able to store several other bags of shoes and clothing. The box locked easily and was no problem on the long drive. We didn't hear anything unusual and, while we didn't encounter any rain on the drive, I think it was water-tight and would've kept things dry if we had. It was light enough for me to carry to storage without help. A great value in comparison to the fancier cargo boxes that were similar in size and cost at least 2x as much! The only special advice I'd give is to be gentle in opening and closing the box, as the hinges are lightweight and may bend easily if you aren't careful. But that didn't happen for us and I am confident that it will last for a long time with careful use.

Easy to install, easy to use

JPRed August 20, 2014

After years of using a soft bag style car top carrier and a long summer road trip requiring constant loading/unloading I bagged the bag and switched to a hard top carrier. I found that this carrier with its 18 cu.ft. of space and elongated design was exactly what I desired. I utilized the ship to store option from Walmart.com and found that very painless and saved me a lot in shipping costs. The plastic material of the carrier is not extremely tough but is durable enought to hold its shape and contain what is inside yet lightweight enough for me to carry and install on my own. I use it on a Toyota Sienna. The roof racks that came factory installed fit perfectly. I did not have to purchase any additional equipment/hardware. The installation was a cinch. Using a two step ladder I was able to quickly (~12mins) install the carrier. No tools required. All installation is done by hand. Loading was just as simple. The box opens from the rear and so far as I have used it the two hinges have no problem holding the top open when lifted up. Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Great rooftop carrier for many reasons

BGGeorge July 3, 2013

I purchased this online because we now have two kids and less room for our week long vacations to the Poconos and the Outer Banks this summer. I picked it up in my local store...this was my only option to get it online and have it within a reasonable period of time. I was a little nervous that I would not get it in time though. When viewing the product, it stated that I would receive it by one date and then a later date is given once you check out. The initial date was before we left for our trip and the checkout date was after we were scheduled to leave. Fortunately, it arrived in the store on the exact date it said it would arrive when you view the product, not the date provided in the check out process. Pick up a the store was surprisingly easy. The employees were responsive, brought the product out and waited for me to pull my car to the sidewalk. It looked huge when we got it, so instead of installing it there, we strapped it to the roof and installed it when we got home. The employee helped with that process and would have helped mount it if we asked. Installation was easy. Once installed, we packed it up two day later for a weeklong vacation. It fit everything we needed to give us more room in the car and made packing decisions easy. If we were not sure if we needed to bring something, we threw it in because we had the space. While driving, we did not notice and shakings or increased noise. We drove through and experienced several hard rains since we had it and have not had any issues with leaks. Overall, we are very psyched about the purchase and look forward to many more trips with it on the roof of our car. Thanks to Walmart for offering this great product at a very reasonable price. PS. This is my first review ever. This means that A. the review could probably be better written, so sorry, and B. the product must be good because I actually followed up and did this!

Great added cargo space for price

ricko4001 October 10, 2013

Shopped around for best reasonably priced cargo box. Settled with Walmart because paid only price of cargo box and got free to store shipping. Keep in mind most places charge about 100-150 for shipping, and you don't see that until you try and check out. Vista XL had highest ratings for price range. Made of ABS plastic like the mother company Thule's cargo boxes, minus the glossy finish and quick attachments. Boxier and wider than most other cargo boxes, which is great for bulkier items as well as 18cu ft of cargo space which there is a big price jump for on the high end boxes. Obviously one compromise is that it's not as aerodynamic, in fact it says in manual not to drive over 45mph when empty. Seems flimsy when not attached even flimsier when open, arm lever/hinges(not sure what they are called - on sides) look very cheap, plastic maybe?, don't think they could handle much if any sideways stress, but then, you're not supposed to do that of course. Remember not to grab cargo box to pull yourself up when it is open, it is very flimsy opened up. Way to attach is simple but tedious, once you get the spacing down. remember to put as far back as possible, keep hatch back door in mind when positioning, so that you get better aerodynamics, ie less wind resistance. Latch that closes doesn't seem as secure as you would expect for something that rides on top of a car loaded with stuff when you may be going 60-70mph, but then it is in the rear. Now, with all that said, i thought it was awesome! It can handle bulk items like a suitcase without any trouble. when it is secured to the roof racks properly and closed it actually is very sturdy. I used it on a VW Jetta Sportwagen and was able to position pretty far back without getting in the way of rear hatchback door. tested it up to just over 50mph empty, the thing barely shook. on first outing i loaded it completely. i couldn't believe i still had room in rear of wagon and could clearly still see through back window because we packed way more than we did for this same trip previous year. i couldn't believe what a difference it made. i finished off with some pillows, which could have been anything soft, to help work like packing filler, to keep things from moving around up there. keep in mind ABS plastic is very slippery and if whatever you put up there has room to move, it will. Closing the cargo box was a little tricky since it is flimsy when open, you need to wiggle it closed to make sure the top fits snuggly over the bottom part. The latch leaves a bit to be desired, it doesn't give you much confidence that it will hold, but it did the job. That is not to say that i didn't throw a bungee cord around the middle of the cargo box and hooked it to the roof racks also.....just in case. (there were only a couple of reviews of over 150 that mentioned it coming open in cross winds, but i had the bungee cords so better safe than sorry.) Only went about 60 miles each way over a long bridge/tunnel. With the setup i had it added no noticeable additional noise, and having the side view mirrors on it that 1st 15 minutes we watched it like a hawk and it barely moved, if at all. After that we forgot about it till time to unload. As long as this lasts us at least a couple of more trips, if something happens to it i would definitely buy it again. Make sure you have space to store it because it can't be made smaller to store. Overall awesome deal, with the free ship to store, putting it as untouchable in value.

Great Carrier

VacationDad March 29, 2014

Installed the cargo carrier in minutes prior to leaving for Florida. Easy install. Very secure to the cross bars. Went through rain for 300 miles without issues. Looks good on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Highly recommend.

Good for the price

GWH1 July 9, 2014

Easy to install with another person to help put it in place. A little hard to open but it locks and there is plenty of storage room inside. It seems flimsy but after it is mounted it is sturdy. For the price compared to other brands at other on-line stores this is a bargain.

Best for Price

Pwrofjoe May 25, 2014

For the price, it doesn't get better than this. It feels flimsy when open but solid when closed. It's easy to install and I like that it opens from the back.
