I had this same feeder yrs ago and loved it but it was unfortunately damaged and my young Grandson wanted to get another one just the same. So I was very happy to see that it was stil available. Same quality of material and same size! We love watching not only the squirels get into it for their peanuts but the Woodpeeckers and Bluejays as well! It's absolutely Perfect for watching the critters eat their nuts!!! My husbannd actually used a bungie cord to secure it around the trunk of our treee in a position that we can watch from our front window.
Very well constructed, will last for years in the weather. Keeps the food inside dry in rainy weather. Bird-Proof Squirrel Feeder. l have mine positioned low so the Chipmunks can also eat from it. Took the Squirrels a bit to figure out how to get to the food inside for them but most have figured it out.
The squirrels love it. Fun watching them learn to open it.
Great my squirrels in my yard love it
the squirrels love it
better than wooden one I've had in past.
Fit With Tree Squrrels Love Peanuts They're Crazy About Peanuts. I Will Buying This Again.
I wanted to love this feeder, as I have purchased many wooden ones which the squirrels chew apart, but I found the lid impossible for the little critters to operate. They lift it with their teeth but are not able to keep it raised to fish out a peanut. The lid overhangs the top of the container, which was a poor design. If the top was less slanted and lined up with the bin, I believe it would be more useable to the squirrels. Also, the bottom lip of the feeder can't accommodate the squirrels for a place to stand. They can't even attempt to raise the lid while hanging onto the tree. I installed a board beneath the feeder to give them a place to stand, but even so they couldn't get any peanuts. I place 3 large binder clips on the food holder which holds that lid up enough for the food to be reached.
We attached a wooden shelf under the feeder for the squirrels to sit on while eating nuts. But the lid puzzled the squirrels. They couldn't figure out how to get to the nuts. So, we propped the lid open with a stick for a week hoping this would let them know how to get the nuts and it worked. Once we removed the stick, they realized they would have to lift the lid to get to the nuts. Success!
If you're looking at this item, I'm thinking you like squirrels and don't want to harm them. This feeder took a really long time for my squirrels to figure out how to get the peanuts out. They had tried to chew the metal all around the thing and had managed to chew some of the plastic liner trying to get into the peanuts. After about a week of this , I propped the lid open completely at first and then eventually lowering it after they understood the mechanics....or so I thought. One time I went to add peanuts and when I opened the feeder a squirrel darted out of it. What ultimately happened was a squirrel got inside the feeder and couldn't figure out how to get out and died in the feeder. In hindsight, I think the one that darted out when I opened it was probably the same squirrel because I had watched countless squirrels going into and out of the feeder with peanuts. But this one apparently didn't get it. It's hard for me to imagine that the squirrel couldn't figure out to lift the lid with his/her head, but that is what happened nonetheless. So I got rid of this feeder and now just throw some peanuts on the ground for the squirrels.
